An October 2012 trip to Mussoorie by phileasfogg

Quote: Even though it’s long been one of north India’s most popular weekend getaways (especially for the none-too-discerning), Mussoorie isn’t quite home to the best places to eat and sleep. Some reviews of the restaurants we visited, and the hotel we stayed at.

Mussoorie: An Overview

Mussoorie—named for a local plant, called mansur (Cororiana nepalensis)—was originally two settlements. On the east was Landour, established in 1827 as a convalescence centre for British soldiers. On the west, at a lower altitude, was Mussoorie itself, where the first huts had been built in the early 1800s by British officers trying to hold this area against invading Gurkha troops. By the late 19th century, Mussoorie had become something like a mini Simla: officers and their families, grass widows, and lovelorn young soldiers turned up every year between April and October to escape the heat of the plains. There was pig-sticking and gambling, theatre and scandal, gossip aplenty.Today, while L...Read More

Hotel | "Not quite regal, but comfy enough"

Mussoorie is chockfull of hotels: there’s one every couple of yards along the Mall (and elsewhere, too), and they range from luxury to really thin shoestring. On our trip, we stayed at the Kasmanda Palace heritage hotel, part of the Welcomheritage Group of Hotels. The Kasmanda Palace has an interesting history: although it is now owned by the former royal family of the once-princely state of Kasmanda (in Orissa), it was originally built, in 1836, by Captain Rennie Tailour of the Bengal Engineers. Then part of the Christ Church next door, the building served as a sanatorium for British officers. Later, it was converted into a school; and, still later, bought by the royal family of Kasmanda.Kas...Read More

Restaurant | "Good Indian food, but the rest is iffy"

Breakfast at Kasmanda Palace Photo - Magnolia Restaurant at Kasmanda Palace, Mussoorie, India

The Kasmanda Palace hotel, where we stayed in Mussoorie, has only one restaurant, Magnolia. You can order room service from here, or you can have your meals in the restaurant (or on the terrace outside when the weather’s good—we had all our breakfasts out here, amidst bird song and with a panoramic view of the Doon Valley stretching below). The restaurant itself has large windows, so even if you don’t sit out on the terrace, you can get a pretty nice view.Inside, Magnolia has the wooden-beamed ceiling that is characteristic of the rest of this early 19th century building. The tables have bright crimson tablecloths and white runners and napkins; the furniture’s all very functional but neat, and the ...Read More

Restaurant | "A jazz connection? "

Back in the 1950s and 60s, a Goan jazz trumpeter became a name to reckon with in the Hindi film industry. His original name had been Antonio Xavier Vaz; but, as a musician—both a player and a composer—he chose to call himself Chic Chocolate. Some of Hindi cinema’s greatest songs from that era had Chic Chocolate playing in them, but invariably in the background. Even back in those days, few people knew of Chic Chocolate; today, even among knowledgeable fans of old Hindi film music, this man’s name is little-known.I was therefore very intrigued when, walking along the Mall, we chanced upon an eatery named Chick Chocolate. My hu...Read More

Restaurant | "Tibetan food in the heart of Mussoorie"

Mussoorie has a fairly large population of Tibetan refugees, some of whom have set up little markets where they sell everything from Tibetan trinkets and religious artefacts to clothing. A couple of the more enterprising ones have set up restaurants—and Kalsang Friends Corner, just opposite Mussoorie’s main post office, on the Mall, is a major landmark. At the other end of this little stretch of road is Domino’s, and two other important Indian chain restaurants: Nirula’s, and Café Coffee Day. Kalsang, unlike these others, doesn’t serve either Indian food or Western fast food: the cuisines here are Tibetan, Chinese, and Thai.Kalsang is hard to miss: the façade is a bright red. We arrived at the rest...Read More

Restaurant | "A meal in a fascinating hotel"

Yes, history is probably not the best reason to dine at a restaurant, but when you’re in a town with as limited good dining options as Mussoorie or Landour: it’s reason enough. Especially when the food is actually (mostly) pretty good.Emily’s is the restaurant at the Rokeby Hotel in Landour, slightly above Chaar Dukaan. The interesting bit about Rokeby (which was built in 1840 by a Captain G N Cauthy) is its literary connections. First of all, there’s the fact that Rokeby was named after Walter Scott’s poem Rokeby. (Mussoorie and Landour between them have a number of old houses that were named after places men...Read More
