The ‘backwaters’ is the network of canals and waterways along the Kerala coast. These are mostly manmade, created centuries ago to provide irrigation and act as transport systems. researching our Kochi trip, we came across many mentions of backwater cruises. These run the gamut from a cruise lasting several days, taking you into the heart of backwater country—the town of Alleppey, the ‘Venice of the East’, to half-day cruises. The experiences range from luxury houseboats to small canoes, and the prices vary accordingly. We settled on the full-day backwater cruise offered by the government-operated Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC). This, according to the KTDC website, would be a tour par...Read More

Kodanadu (also known as Kodanad) is a riverside village on the mainland area of Ernakulam district. It sits on the bank of the Periyar river (after which the Periyar Tiger Reserve is named), and is about 42 km from Kochi. The Periyar Tiger Reserve was too far—and we had too little time—for us to visit that, much was we love the great outdoors. But we did have time for a visit to the Kodanadu Elephant Training Camp, so we took the opportunity to check this out.Till well into the 1960s (and beyond), Kodanadu was the site of an elephant training centre, where elephants captured in the nearby forests were trained. In 1977, with the passing of a law prohibiting the capture of elephants, this aspect of K...Read More

About half an hour’s drive further inland from Kodanadu is another place that’s worth a visit if you’re interested in wildlife. If anything, this is even more of an attraction than Kodanadu, because you don’t merely get to see wildlife in a tame, enclosed space (though there’s some of that, too), but in the wild. Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (after the father of Indian ornithology), is considered one of India’s finest bird sanctuaries. It’s not a very large one, by Indian standards—only about 25 square kilometres—but that modest area is populated by some of the most diverse and interesting avifauna in the subcontinent. We visited Thattekad after our trip to Ko...Read More

We’d set off on our excursion to the Kodanadu Elephant Training Camp and the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary at 6.30 AM. En route (half an hour after leaving), we’d eaten a couple of sandwiches and a slice of cake each, that our hotel staff had given us as packed breakfast. By the time we’d finished with Kodanadu and Thattekad and were headed back to Kochi, it was well past noon. Unsurprisingly, we were feeling rather hungry. Our driver, Thomas, on being asked where we could get a decent meal, said, "I’ll stop at the next town. I’ll take you to a good middle-class restaurant. Not a luxury one, mind. Because it is off-season, the luxury ones don’t have any visiting tourists. Who knows when they last cooked fo...Read More

The Kerala Folklore Museum was on our list of places to see in Kochi, but we didn’t know when we’d be able to fit it in, since it isn’t in Fort Cochin (which would have meant a quick walk or auto ride), and we’d already booked two-long trips into the countryside on two other days. When we’d get the time (during the day) to go and see the museum—which is on the mainland—was something we were still trying to figure out when, on our way back from Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, our driver said, "There’s a good museum here, the Kerala Folklore Museum. Would you like to see it?"Of course we would, so the driver drew the car in beside a lovely triple-storeyed building, wood-panelled and with the sloping roofs,...Read More
