When we arrived to our room, the ...Read more Just got back from a ten day stay and we had a great time. Yes, the resort is a little older, but it's kept very clean. In general, the staff does a very good job and tries very hard to make your experience positive. When we arrived to our room, the hot water in the sink and all water in the shower were not working. We called the front desk. They said to go ahead and settle in; the water would be fixed soon. We did just that and went to explore the resort area, and sure enough, the water was on when we returned. The food is really not too bad. Breakfast (try the leche milch -sweet milk- on the french toast. Yum!) and lunch at the buffet are great, plenty of variety. The buffet has a different theme each evening. Some of those are just so-so, but there's always salad and pasta available. There are two side stations at the buffet, one where things are made to order and one where the dishes are prepared in typical local cuisine. Both are very good. We ate at the reservation restaurant one night. It was good, but we liked the variety of the buffet. The water in front of the hotel tends to be cloudy. Walk south past the break wall at the south edge of the resort and the water is always crystal clear. Great snorkeling in that general area, we saw tons of fish (including small barracuda), rays, etc. The beach in front of the Melia is really nice though. The beach is large and never crowded; we always found beach chairs. The beach in front of the neighboring hotel is sometimes crowded. The island is great to explore and check out beach clubs, reef snorkeling, and the more primitive east coast of the island. We weren't sure what to expect after reading some of the negative reviews. If you tend to be high maintenance or are typically hard to please, you might not be completely satisfied with the Melia. However, if you are up for a great time in a great place and you are willing to roll with a few minor punches should they come your way, the Melia is a great deal. The staff is awesome, the setting is really nice, the food is pretty good and the drinks are always flowing. The beds were not super soft pillow-top, but they were OK and we slept fine. Close
