Yes, there's a musty odor in the rooms. Minor inconvenience after a few shots of tequila at the bar with awesome bartender Felipe. Yes, the food is mediocre. Definitely a little bit better at the reservations-only restaurant. But, as my boyfriends says, you don't go to Mexico for the food. We went downtown on our 3rd day for McDonald's. Best view you will ever get from a McDonald's! But there's always something somewhat decent at the buffet and we didn't go hungry. The staff is awesome and all the locals we encountered were great as well. Highly recommend an island jeep tour with Olympus tours (they have an office in the hotel). You get to visit a tequila factory, have lunch at an a super cool restaurant by the ocean, go to a lighthouse and visit the crocodiles. We stayed at the Paradise suite and it was totally worth it. If you are looking for privacy, make sure you get one as far from the bar as possible. Would go back for sure!
