A quiet week in the Costa del Sol

A March 2003 trip to Costa del Sol by KitKat99

Quote: The Costa wasn't what we were expecting and pleasantly surprised we were off exploring the sights. Whitewashed villages in the hills, and fantastic shopping malls at Puerto Banus. Okay maybe not lying on the beach in March but plenty to keep the whole family amused. Zoos, waterparks and history all round. Take time to see the real Spain behind the beach.

    Overview

Places to visit whilst on the Costa del Sol have got to include Ronda, an imposing Moorish town with one of Spain's oldest Bullrings. It contains a museum, and modern day bullfighting originates from here. There is an amazing bridge that connects the old and new town and the town itself ends at the top of a sheer cliff. Fantastic. Even the drive up to it is awesome. Also the town of Gaucin near Gibraltar is lovely. Very untouristy so Spanish life is right before your eyes. You'll never find crowds here so escape there today!!Quick Tips: If like us you're travelling with young kids who like only what they like, then bring a starter kit for breakfast from home as y...Read More

Fantastic, cheap Spanish leather goods. My hubby got himself a new belt for 6 euros. Beautiful handbags for the ladies and pottery too big to take home. You want it all. Street vendors sell hot honey roasted peanuts and almonds: very tasty but the bags of nuts are bigger in Mijas village in the mountains. They are very addictive!!!!! Lovely tablecovers for that special meal and more. I could just go on and on!!!!!!!!!!!

Not a mention of this amazing little town in the Lonely Planet guide, but well worth a visit. The drive alone is magnificent, from the coast head towards Casares and up into Gaucin. Here you will find good eating places and a little castle - Castillo del Aguila - with its own private chapel to Santa Nino. An old man was waiting who explained the history, all in Spanish. It's a climb up to it but the views over the valley are spectacular. Whitewashed streets with people going about their everyday business - a great place to observe a real Spanish village.
