Admission costs about 12 Euros ( May 2003 ) but it is well worth the money. Once inside , you descend down some steps and enter the caves. Huge caverns filled with stalagmites and stalactites, formed over many millions of years. There are many different caves to see and many of the rock formations are in peculiar shapes that , with a little imagination , can be made out.
Guided tours are available but we found it just as easy to follow the route ourselves. A word of warning for the infirm, these caves involves some steep steps and a, at times, precarious route so I would advise against those who are not surefooted.
The acoustics are such that concerts are still held there (one guide was serenading his group while we were there and it was amazing to listen to). The caves really are something you need to see to do them justice -- words cannot, in this instance, adequately portray the beauty and majesty of these natural phenomenon.

The Guiness Book of Records says that the largest stalactite in the world is located in these caves. The caves are very large, like an amphetheatre or a cathedral.
There is a concert in one of the caves each year. Stadium seating has been permanently installed in the cave called, "Ballet Hall".
These caves were discovered by a group of five boys, from Maro and Nerja, in 1959 (Francisco Navas, Miguel y Manuel Muñoz Zorrilla, José Luis Barbero de Miguel y José Torres Cárdenas.)
Only 1/3 of the caves are open to the public. These caves are of Karstic origin.
The caves close between 2 and 4pm daily. You must exit the caves at 2pm. We were escorted out by a guard at 2:10pm. If you are aware of this restriction, it won't pose a problem. I would recommend timing your visit to commence at 1pm so you will have plenty of time to see the caves before you must leave at 2pm. The gift shop also closes between 2 and 4pm, so I don't have any post cards or souvenirs from my visit. We arrived on our bus tour at 1:20 and immediately entered the caves. When we exited at 2:20 the gift shop was closed. Our bus left at 3pm. We did enjoy a drink at the restaurant overlooking the valley and the sea while we waited for 3 pm to arrive. It was a beautiful view.
While you are in the area, visit the "Balcony of Europe" in Nerja. If you are able to, stay overnight at Hotel Balcon de Europa, located beside the Balcony of Europe.
