Description: Austin Motel is an atypical motel although more of what you would expect to find in Austin, just a little bit weird. On South Congress, it has a great location, across from the Continental Club, Jo's Coffee, and Amy's Ice Cream. Several curious shops and small restaurants line each side of the street, within walking distance of the motel. I have been going there for 12 years since 2001 or so. It hasn't changed much. This is good. It's phallic sign is hard to miss. Corporate free? Ah yes. They are real keen on keeping things simple. You can't get a reservation unless you call at just the right time. No waiting list is kept. So it's catch as catch can. The rooms are funky. No two rooms are the same. Interiors are thrown together with second hand furniture. It's a hoot. The old style 1950's bathrooms with multi colored tiles are to be expected. I happen to love it. Other amenities include a kidney shaped swimming pool and a restaurant called the Snack Bar adjacent to the motel. Check out the sculpture garden in the back parking lot. Fun place. My first choice in Austin.
