Its history dates back to the days of 1599. Its governor general named Dom Francisco de Souza, admired Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrate (Holy Mother of Mount Serrat) so much that he ordered the construction of the Monte Serrate Chapel. It is the oldest temple in Santos. Every year on the 8th of September, they celebrate the birth of that chapel, with procession celebrations.
Its most interesting history occurred in the year of 1614. In that year, the naval ships of Holland invaded the area and the citizens of Santos escaped certain death by climbing up the mountain. Once atop the mountain, they prayed for salvation to Mother Mary. As this occurred portions of the walls are said to have fallen on the advancing armies of Holland below, therefore saving many people above from certain death.
