We choose the Mayan encounter and it was ...Read more After going on a tour of the tourist trap Xcaret, we decided we wanted something a little less crowded and not as much of a tourist trap. Someone we met at the resort recommended checking out alternatives. We choose the Mayan encounter and it was excellent. Saul was our guide and picked us up at our hotel right on time. It was raining and miserable and we had our doubts about how the day was going to go. It was about a 2 hour drive to start the tour and by the time we got there the rain had stopped. We started right off with a rappel into a Cenote (a type of cave).
It was a nice adreneline rush to start the day and the cave was beautiful. Saul told us how the cave gave shelter to locals when hurricane Wilma came thru a few years back.
Next was off to the zipline, which took you over the jungle top. It was a fantastic view and another adreneline rush.
We then kayaked a short way to a jungle trail. This was fun but a bit shorter then I would have liked. I was hoping to see some wildlife along the way but there really was none.
We then hiked to the best part. After a brief Mayan blessing, we climbed down into another cenote with an underground stream. We all jumped in for a swim. It was just fantastic. Again I would have liked more time there but we were not rushed and most of the others looked ready to go. We had a small group of 12 and we all got along great, so that was nice.
We then took a short drive back to the Mayan village for lunch. It was again better then expected. The hand made empanades were great and so was the Mayan style chicken. We were offered several waters flavored with tamarind and other tropical flavors.
Finally it was off to the Mayan ruins. This was the most crowded part but was still far less crowded then Xcaret. The ruins were awesome and we followed Saul's advice and rode bicks to the large temple after a breif tour that was very informative and short enough not to bore the kids.
We climbed to the top and let me tell you, I thought I was in shape but this was tiring but worth it. The view was incredible.
The trip back down was harder then the way up and not for the faint of heart.
All in all this was just a fantastic adventure and one I would highly recommend for those who don't want big crowds and want to see something a little different.
Two warnings though, they do try to get you to leave your cameras behind because they really want to sell you pictures. They were not pushy about it and I brought mine anyway. The money goes to the Mayan community but to be honest, the pictures were way over priced and most were not that good.
Also, do not bring sunscreen as they will not let you use it. The water in the cenote is very pure and they want to keep it that way.
The only disappointment was that I was hoping to see more wildlife, but I can let that slide. It was the best part of our trip. Close
