Mazatlan Summer Experience

An August 2001 trip to Mazatlan by Zetty Carrillo

Quote: My husband and I, and another couple drove from San Antonio, TX, to Mazatlan, Mexico. It was an exciting experience to drive and see the sights. Mazatlan is spread out, and bigger than what I had imagined it would be. The water was clear, and the fishing there is excellent. We went at a time when the kids were just getting back to school, so the beaches and the hotel zone were not packed as I heard it can get. It was a quiet town when we went, and it was nice and relaxing.

    Overview

    Quote:
We went in mid August, and Mazatlan was pretty slow with activity due to most kids/college students being back in school. It was peaceful, but some of the restaurants/spots near the beach were closed due to it being so dead. One of the best highlights was going on the tour to Stone Island. It is a little cruise that took about a half hour to get there, and then you get to the island and they feed you and give you free cocktails. There are activities such as horseback riding, banana boat rides, dance contest, etc.The vendors also go on foot selling their merchandise or talent such as bathing suit wraps, necklaces, anklets, panchos, tattoos, braiding hair, artists that will draw your picture, e...Read More

Best Things Nearby:The old malarcon was my favorite area. It is the busiest, and is right on the beach. There are several restaurants and a few night clubs.Best Things About the Resort:The landscaping was beautifully manicured. The timeshare is not in the main busy hotel zone. It is in a more private area. The units are very large. Our unit had the view of the beach. Some units have a view of the pool and the gardens. The timeshare is right on the beach. Resort Experience:The two bedroom unit we stayed in had the view of the beach through the back door. The floors were ceramic tiled. The furniture and decorations were Mexican style. The unit was very large ...Read More

We went for lunch and I ordered the huge grilled jumbo shrimp. It was very tasty. My husband ordered the grilled chicken breast. The chips and salsa were very good, and they have a good little variety of food to choose from besides the traditional Mexican food.

We went there on a Friday night and it was so packed. The food was very good and the service was good too. I ordered a combination grilled fish plate and my husband got a combination fried fish plate. They serve huge margaritas that a couple of people can share from.

They had a live little marching band that played their Mexican music, with so many instruments. It was different than the mariachis or tejano type of music.

The boat ride is only about 1/2 hr ride, and they take you to Stone Island. Once there, you are taken in the back of a trailor like hay ride, to the area where you get to select which activities you want to participate in. The Banana Boat ride was my favorite. They have horseback riding with a guided tour. They have scuba diving excursions and snorkeling to choose from. Or you can just relax in the beautiful calm and refreshing water. They serve you a buffet lunch, and cocktails are included. There are several vendors there also, and a few artists that can draw your picture. The whole tour takes about 1/2 a day. Don't forget your sunscreen, and it's better to go with your bathing suit on ...Read More

My husband and his friend went deep sea fishing. What they told me is that we should have gone and that us girls would of had a lot of fun. They caught some really large fish and one of the guys fileted them for a tip. We got to cook them that night at our resort. It was the best fresh fish I've ever eaten!
