Travel ideas from Hong Kong on a budget
Posted by rebekkak on March 02, 2010
Hi there!
My husband and I are traveling to Hong Kong on business in July (sweltering, I know). We'd like to extend our trip to Asia on our own dime, but don't know where to go. We need to be able to fly fairly inexpensively from Hong Kong and back. Wherever we go needs to be pretty cheap to stay in and explore. Any ideas?
Thanks.

If it were me, with all of Asia to aim for and a month to play with, I would go for South East Asia.
Thailand has always been great place to visit especially the beaches of the southern region. It is certainly a paradise for travelers, Thailand has achieved remarkable achievements in the fields of fine arts like music, dance, paintings, sculpture and crafts

Thailand isn't a good place to visit right now. Before I did anything I would double-check the travel advice for visitors. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office site here in the UK is an excellent resource for anyone travelling abroad.

Thailand is okay for a visit. Protests are over for awhile now. Even during the protests tourists were still flying to Thailand by the thousands. The protests were in an area of Bangkok that could be avoided anyway.
Thailand will be much cheaper for hotels than Hong Kong. Flights to Bangkok are pretty reasonable. I have used China Airlines and Cathay several times.
Start in Bangkok for a day or two before moving out to visit other areas. Transportation in Thailand is pretty cheap when compared to the US or Europe.
Thailand is safe to visit and has been that way for a while. During any protests in Thailand tourists are not the targets of protesters!
Good luck.
