Description: Literally translated as “Independence Square”, Merdeka Square commemorates the site on which the Union flag was lowered and the first raising of the Malayan flag took place in 1957. The square features a 311 foot tall flagpole - one of the tallest in the world - at the southern end of the square, marking the spot of the original flag raising. While there’s not a lot to see within the square itself, it is surrounded by many important buildings, including the Royal Selangor Club Complex, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the National History Museum, the Memorial Library, the Gothic-style St. Mary’s Anglican Cathedral, the original Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, the Sanitary Board Fountain and the modern Dayabumi Complex.
