One ...Read more I am a big fan of Picasso and the Picasso museums in Barcelona is one of my all-time favourite museums so when we were in Malaga for a day I knew that I had to go and visit their museum and see if it could possibly live up to the Barcelona one.
One of the best things about visiting Malaga is that everything worth seeing is so close to each other and the Picasso museum is only a short walk from the Alcazaba and Roman forum.

Entry to the museum is quite reasonable and is only 6 Euros to visit the permanent collection and 4.50 Euros to visit the temporary exhibits.
You can buy a combined ticket to visit both for only 8 Euros which I thought was really good value. Making it even better value for pensioners and students under 25 the entry price is reduced by 50% and for those under 18 it is actually free to visit. It is also free for everyone on the last Sunday of every month.

The museum is housed in the stunning 16th century Palacio de Buenavista which does make for a more impressive space than a lot of more modern museum buildings do.
The permanent collection houses some good works by Picasso but I did find that there were a lot of sketches in the collection and whilst these may be of interest to his die-hard fans like me my partner was bored quickly by these and wanted to see some of his more colourful works that he is more famous for.
Luckily the museum does have some amazing pieces that even my partner was impressed with.

The permanent collection isn’t as extensive as I had hoped especially as Malaga was Picasso’s home town but for those people who suffer from museum fatigue then the collection is just the right size to enjoy without getting bored.
The temporary exhibits when we visited were a photographic exhibition of Picasso and his work by the photographer David Douglas Duncan and I really enjoyed this as although I have been a fan of Picassos work since I was a teenager I have never really seen a lot of photographs of the man himself or found out much about his life.

The second exhibit was named cartoons on the front line and had some pictures by Picasso as well as other artists chronicling their feelings and concerns about war and conflict. This was my favourite part of the museum and it was fascinating to look at some pictures some of which I had seen before and really study the material and see them in a different light. It was also a chance to see some pictures from artists that I wasn’t all that familiar with before.

A bonus of visiting the Picasso museum in Malaga is that when you have seen all the art you can venture down to the lower floors of the museum building and see some archaeology from Malagas Roman period as the museum building stands on an important Roman site.
There is also a really nice café where you can have a rest and get a coffee after looking at all the art works on display.

I really enjoyed my visit to the Picasso museum in Malaga. It wasn’t as impressive or as extensive as the one in Barcelona but it was more intimate and not as busy as the Barcelona one so it meant that I could actually appreciate the art works on display more thoroughly and at the end of my visit I felt that I got a little bit more insight in to the great man himself.

Everywhere, there is Picasso this and Picasso that, but the main attraction (especially for me) was the Picasso Museum. It was a little tricky to find, but if you head up from the main drag along the water, it is rahter easy to find. Best piece of advise is to ask someone. Everyone is very nice and loves to help you. There is also a small, little shack along the main road (it is hard to find, but its there) that is a tourism center, and they have walking tour maps that are amazing. If you spend a week in Malaga, you could do a new walking map each day and have the best time ever.

But I digress. When we arrived at the Picasso Museum, we were brought into the security area and asked to fork over our cameras and bags and then pay the 6 Euros to enter. I wasn't sure really what to expect with regards of what paintings would be there since it seems that every museum I ever go to has a Picasso painting. But this place was created and stocked by Picasso's grand kids and it was unbelievable. There was room after room of Picasso art, with everything from paintings and sculptures to craft projects and doodles. It really was amazing. The museum tour was rather fast, unfortunately for me. But it might have to do with the fact that I was exhausted and had been walking around Malaga all day long, so soaking in more culture might have been lost on me fully, but it was worth it. And the building itself was really architecturally simple and beautiful, making the contents that much more impacting.

When you are in Malaga, try to do the whole Picasso tour thing (the house, Museum, cafes and bars) but if you are on a tight schedule, the Picasso Museum should definately be a stop over. And, no matter what you, Malaga is a city that doesn't unimpress you. Enjoy. Close
