I was not planning to go to Baikal alone. But my friend got off the plane in the last moment, leaving me alone and confused. What followed was one of my best trips, full of amazing nature, cultural sights and unexpected encounters.

Siberia is raw, rugged, and nearly the last place on earth to top a traveler's wish list of ideal vacations. So of course, it peaked mine! And after one earthquake, 5 picnics, 36 popsicles, 87 sunsets, and a camel ride, I came home with a much different idea of Siberia than when I left!

Lake Baikal in Siberia is one of the most awesome lakes on earth. It is the oldest lake, the deepest lake, becoming deeper every year. "One who has seen Baikal will be captured and is drawn to return, even if only in dreams."
