Manaus is the largest city in the state of Amazonas. Most travelers, myself included, use it as a starting point for jungle excursions. The beauty of the rainforest is breathtaking; it is something everyone should experience.

So, this past weekend we took a small vacation and went back to Novo Airao. While there, I took the opportunity to talk to the Mayor of the municipality about an English course, as well as ways to make the tourism industry grow. Being that we stay at a hotel located on the river, I took the opportunity to take one of the canoes out Saturday morning. Obviously, I did not just wake up, and take the canoe. I first went out with Francis, and after her yelling and screaming that the canoe was going to turn over or water was going to enter, I returned her to the pier, and went back out on my own. I paddled around for about 30 or 40 minutes. I began to tire, so I returned. As I was passing sun tan lotion, I saw two of the sons of the owner out with the canoe, and decided to go back out with them. They came back and picked me up. As we paddled past the gas station, which I had been in front of 20 minutes earlier, someone screamed from the platform that there was an alligator in the water. We looked around and I estimate it was about 5 meters or 15 feet away. As we saw it, it quickly disappeared under the water. As the one boy started to scream, I grabbed the paddle and used my "muscle" to get us onto dry land as quickly as possible. I had never seen a crocodile or alligator that close before in my life. As we got to the platform to look for the alligator, the men ran to get their guns because alligators have been known to eat people. They are known, thanks to the Discovery Channel and those National Geographic films, to take a bull or cow and eat it, so I had an idea what damage it can do. We chased it for a little, but it quickly went under and wasn't seen again. With that said, I was afraid to reenter the water until we left Sunday afternoon.

The Anavilihanas is the largest archipelago in possibly the entire world. It is comprised of almost 500 islands when the river is full and over 800 when the river is at its low stage.

I was on a business trip and only had time to spend the weekend as a tourist, which wasn't enough. Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas, is the main entrance for visitors to the Amazon in Brazil.
