Each July we vacation at Smuggler's Notch and are never disappointed. We decided to exchange a float week and try out a winter on the mountain. I have not been skiing for years and this would only be the third time my sons would be snowboarding. The intructors were so patient and helpful. Even when we were not on the mountain, we enjoyed the FunZone, family karaoke, and bingo. We hope to enjoy another winter getaway soon. Close

There is nothing for the kids to do here during the summer. There is on the weekends only a rock climbing wall, a ride up to the mountain and walking and biking trails. My kids were bored to death. I do have to say the gym was pretty good as was the sauna and steam bath. Kids are not allowed there usually but the staff made an exception. There is only and outdoor pool which is fine during the day but it gets chilly at night and you really can't use the pool. Close

Mr. K. and I went to Vermont for his Grandfather's funeral on Friday, July 31st. It was my first time attending a funeral in the U.S., as well as my first time visiting Vermont. Mr. K's Grandfather, Mr. Wilson (99), passed away in Jan. this year. Mr. K told me that the ground was too hard to bury his Grandfather in the winter; therefore they had to hold the funeral in the summer. It was the time to bury Mr. Wilson and celebrate his life. As we had planned, we rented a car and went up to Vermont for Mr. Wilson's funeral; moreover, we had a short vacation in Vermont after the funeral. On Friday, as expected, I saw many new faces from Mr. K's family. I was the only Asian person in the funeral and in the farm house where we met and spent time before and after the funeral. Everyone was very friendly and I was pleased to meet them. The ceremony was dignified, peaceful and simple. It took about two hours to be done. I liked the way they coped with the dead. I will be dead one day and I would like to be treated in a similar manner the event was simple and peaceful. Vermont is about a six hour drive from NYC. Vermont is called The Green Mountain State and is well known for its nature. I enjoyed and had a wonderful time in Vermont. I saw beautiful nature, walked in the mountains and visited many places. In just four days, I experienced a lot and I know there is a lot more to see and do, so I will visit Vermont again for sure. IVERMONT. Our schedule in Vermont for four days: 7/31 - St. Johnsbury and Barnet (The funeral) 8/1 - St. Johnsbury and Barnet ( Devil Hill Sunset) 8/2 - Cabot Cheese Factory Tours ->> Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory Tours ->> Grandview Winery Wine Testing ->> Essex Factory Outlets ->> Downtown Burlington 8/3 - Lake Champlain Chocolate Factory Tours ->> Lake Champlain Burlington ->> Vermont Teddy Bears Factory Tours ->> Lake Champlain Ferries From VT to NY ->> NYC Close

We had a great time hiking at Smuggs! My husband and I hiked the ski run and lift line areas while our kids had fun in Smuggs summer day camp activities. It was a beautiful time to be there before peak summer crowds. We saw wild strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, wild flowers, honey bees, butterflies, moose tracks, racoon tracks. There is a fantastic stream that we hiked along with our children, wading in the crisp clear water and climbing along the rocks. We are looking forward to more hiking this summer! Close

Skiing opens around Thanksgiving and on good years they make snow through June 1st, keeping only one long, wide run, "Superstar Glacier", open. The skiing ranges from the very beginner slopes—great for learning, to tough mogul runs, and newly cut "natural terrain parks" through the trees that will keep advanced skiers busy, especially when there's plenty of snow. For bump skiers, Bear Mountain (one of Killington's 6 areas) offers a classic bump run right under the lift that ends at a bar with music blaring, and people taking a break on the porch while watching the skiers coming down all day. Killington has the most terrain, and the most snow making of anywhere in the East, meaning there are plenty of long cruisers for anyone looking to work on their turns. Day passes run a pricey $70, but if you book online and in advance, you can save as much as 15%. If you're planning on going for more than a couple of weekends, buy your season pass before October: it costs around $400 with only a few blackout dates. This can be a steal if you're a regular weekend-er or can get up there for a week or two in addition to your weekend trips. This is an "All-East" pass that includes a number of other mountains, including: Mount Snow, Sunday River, Sugarloaf, Attitash and Pico. Normal All-East passes, bought in season without blackout dates, go for around $1000. All passes include lodging discounts, which can also be helpful if you don't have a place to stay. Close

Downtown Stowe is a fun place to spend an afternoon. We took the family down for lunch and ended up spending hours browsing all the shops along the way. They have a general store that sells a little of everything! They had one store with a great sandwich shop and a bookstore. The real treat was going downstairs where they had literally hundreds of interesting things from kitchen gadgets to the ever popular souvenier T-shirts. I spent over an hour browsing and picking up great things I had never seen before. I could have easily spent another hour but my husband and kids wanted to press on. I'll definitely be visiting that store on our next visit!
There are also some great antique and handmade furniture stores that have one of a kind items. All in all, Stowe is a great place to spend an afternoon if you love shopping!

Stowe has a great diversity of ski terrain to satisfy both novices and experts. Since it was so late in the year (March 26th through April 2nd), the lower areas were beginning to show bare spots, and many of the beginner runs were closed for the season. If you are a beginner, I would recommend visiting in more prime time conditions to avoid the limited novice areas and the sometimes difficult conditions (bare/icy spots and heavy/slushy snow in the warm afternoons). Even with the limited novice runs, we found enough green and easy blue runs to satisfy everyone. The food service offerings are fairly limited and expensive. The parking is very close to the lifts; therefore, I would recommend packing a lunch and retrieving it when you are ready to eat. Close
