This is an upper-end resort that caters to couples.

Rooms: We had a Jr Suite. The rooms are typical for the Riviera Maya (king size bed, marble floors, Jacuzzi, etc.). We had an ocean view in a building that was close to the night club. It was a bit of walk to the main building, but that was not a problem for us. It was a little noisy at night - we could hear the thumping of the music from the club. This was our only complaint of the whole trip. Our room was on the third floor and the unobstructed view of the ocean outweighed any concerns about noise from the club.

Food: The food was fantastic. I would give them 4 stars on true 5 star scale. The buffets were good, but on par with other resorts. It was the al a carte restaurants that set this place apart. I have read some negative comments about the food in the a la cartes – it was “strange” and small portions. Well, my response to that is if you think that Applebee’s is a great restaurant, you probably will not be happy with the food at El Dorado Royale. The portion sizes are definitely small. But, when you are eating 5 course meal, they should be small. Note: different packages allow you access to different restaurants and reservations are required for the a la cartes. Make sure you know what you are eligible for and make your reservations as soon as you get there.

Drinks: Top shelf and plenty of them – just what you want from an all-inclusive. Waiters will deliver drinks to you on the beach. Very nice.

Beach: Unfortunately, the “towel game” exists here. Prime spots are grabbed early. An unfortunate thing about this location is that the waves hit the beach pretty hard. The resort has installed artificial barrier reefs (huge sand bags) to make the water more safe and enjoyable.

Activities: We are not big on the activities that happen around the pool but, other people really seem to enjoy it. We did take the resort jungle tour and saw one of the cenotes and Mayan ruins. I would recommend that you wear good shoes – not sandals.

The El Dorado Royale tops our list of favorite places to visit. I highlighted some of my “concerns” with the resort. Don’t let that cloud your decision. My wife and I would come back here again and again. You won’t be disappointed. Close
