One can plan to be in the right place and sometimes you just get lucky. Such was my good fortune when I selected the auberge in Montreal where my husband and I stayed during our first visit to that city. An auberge is defined as an inn, but as their website explains l'Auberge Les Passants du Sans Soucy is classified as a 3-star small hotel, slightly larger than a B&B, but having the intimacy of a bed & breakfast. It is situated perfectly in the midst of Vieux Montreal or the old city section of Montreal. And, it doesn't hurt that the street it is on has some of the most appealing restaurants in the entire city.
The moment we walked in the front door, we felt as if we had been transported to Paris. The entry has an inviting European feel to it and the welcome given us by Lucas was warm and friendly. It was the last city on a 12-day vacation and we liked the fact that it wasn't another cookie cutter hotel. Lucas told us a little about the immediate area and answered our questions about restaurants, then showed us the dining room for breakfast in the morning and up to our room. We stayed in Room #201 which was spacious and comfortable. We had plenty of space to store our clothes, good lighting, a flat-screen color television with both English and French channels, free wi-fi, and an ensuite bath which though small had good water pressure. Many of the buildings in this section of the city are original from the 19th century and sometimes older. They have been painstakingly restored or renovated and usually keep the flavor of the original design.
Their friendly and very efficient staff serve breakfast each morning which is included with the room. A nice menu of fresh sliced fruit, tea, coffee, juice, croissants, and omelets are offered each morning. Their staff will answer questions about the area as well as providing printed directions from the internet when necessary. But as I said in the beginning, the best part of this lovely establishment is their location. Being centrally located on rue Saint Paul Ouest, they are amidst restaurants, the port area, and accessible to the major sites in Montreal. We did not have a car with us and felt comfortable walking or using their subway system.
As anybody who has stayed in a bed & breakfast will tell you, the personal touches make such a difference and having a closer relationship with the staff makes the experience more memorable and special. When it came time for us to depart, they ordered our taxi from a trusted service with whom they do business. We hated to leave but are happy to spread the word about this lovely and well run establishment. If you find yourself in Montreal, make sure to give them a try. Their website is well constructed and includes accolades from known travel experts and media sources. They are also highly rated by travelers and endorsed by tripadvisor.com. I'm keeping them on my accommodations list for sure! Close
