Activities, resort-like grounds, super-nice staff, beach, and iguanas
We were Hurricane Katrina victims and needed a place to stay last-minute, so we found a two-bedroom at Ocean Palms for the week. We couldn't have been more pleased. We got a 10h-floor room with incredible views of the ocean and grounds. The resort was impeccable. Everyone there was so nice, especially Neil and Glenn at the front desk. The resort had many activities, like coconut bowling, trivia contests, hula dancing and shows, ‘50s show with dinner, drink-making classes, hair-braiding, and lei-making for the kids. There were also water aerobics, scuba and snorkeling lessons, and a game room. What a great place. The kids loved it and it was easy to keep them busy and entertained. You could also buy a video card that allowed you to check out endless amounts of videos to watch if you had spare time. This place was like an all-inclusive resort without the hefty price. They had cookouts two of the days we were there that only cost $5 for hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, or chicken wings. You couldn't beat the price. There were colada and margarita classes that allowed you to learn to make the drinks and sample them all, too. There was even bingo for my mom and the kids.
I can't say enough about this resort. It was a great getaway and kept our minds off the troubles back home in Louisiana. We even stayed for another week at the Sea Gardens, which is part of the same resort. We loved this place and will definitely go back. It was a great place for the kids. The rooms were also great. They had two bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a Jacuzzi tub in one and a two-person shower.

When I went into the lobby, my initial opinion quickly changed. The lobby was nice and the staff was great – check-in went really fast. The Ocean Palms is across the street from the beach. The 5992 Ocean Palms and the 2890 Sea Gardens Beach and Tennis Resort are located at the same address. The Ocean Palms sits in the back of the property, 9 or 10 stories high, with views of the pools, waterways, or the ocean. Sea Gardens villas are located throughout the property, and some are oceanfront!
Our room was a two-bedroom, two-bathroom villa on the fourth floor with a view of the pool. The resort has four pools. We also had direct access to the sun deck from our balcony. I would have liked a closed-in balcony, but two of the villas on the fourth-floor balcony lead directly to the sun deck.
I loved our villa. It did not look anything like the picture in the book or the website. They are completely remodeling all the rooms at both resorts. They are very, very nice. I highly recommend this resort to everyone.

The unit also had a balcony area, which could be accessed from either the living room or the master bedroom, and looked out directly onto the pool. The unit was well-stocked with all necessities; towels could also be exchanged twice a week, if desired, and parking was in a covered area within easy access to the unit.

There were four pools total - one near each building. There were tennis courts a block down the street but we didn't use them. The beach is across the street. It was nice but not spectacular. There are chairs, tents, jet skis and parasailing available. We went parasailing. It was great. The activities director, Jeff, is great. Very fun. He has a variety of activities available. We tried karaoke, coconut bowling and the treasure hunt. There are several day trips available as well (Miami nightlife, Key West, Everglades). We didn't do any of these. We just wanted to relax.
There were also a couple of dinner shows at the resort. The animal show is a must-do. There was a variety of animals (Baby alligator, anteater, fox, parrot, panther and more) which we were allowed to touch. This activity requires a ticket ($6/person).

Now I know why they named this place the Sea Gardens -- every nook and cranny of the place is a spectacular garden. There are flowers and plants everywhere you look! The three swimming pools were very nice and two were heated. The resort has a nice gym. The location is ideal, just out of all the crowds.
My brother and I had a studio apartment, right on the ocean. The studio had a comfy queen size bed and a pretty decent fold out sofa bed. We had a small kitchen, dining area, and everything we needed to be comfortable for a week in 80-degree sunny weather.
Here are the few complaints I had. As soon as we got to the room, we realized the A/C did not work. The next day, they had changed out the A/C and we had no more troubles with it. The other small trouble was ants entering our room. These were not red ants (the kind that bite and hurt), but tiny, fast-moving, black ants. The locals called them sugar ants. I don't know if this is because they taste like sugar or eat sugar (but suspect the latter). The resort folks sprayed for ants and I think they entered the great anthill in the sky (or maybe they hid behind the oven until we left).
The beach was great. It had a lot of old people on it, but if you want to see the pretty people, just cruise on down to South Beach. After a few hours of that, you will yearn for the old folks back at the Sea Garden beach.
We got this hotel by using RCI Bonus Vacations. We paid $475 for the studio on the beach. I would stay at the Sea Gardens again in a heartbeat.
