Description: The Wyndham Hotel in Vinings looks at first glance like one of the many mansions you might find on prestigious West Paces Ferry Road. Perched above a two-tiered parking lot, it's a white building with a Southern style porch complete with white wicker rocking chairs.
Inside, the front lobby decor is as conservative as the city where the hotel is located -- think oils of horses in gilded frames -- yet it is still inviting with a glass-encased aviary to one side that will delight children. A sparkling pool can be seen through the lobby's back windows.
When I worked near Vinings a couple of years ago, my company booked one of the Wyndham banquet rooms to host a training class. Both the space and the staff were wonderful for this purpose. Nonetheless, when I had the occasion to stay at the Wyndham one evening with my family, I had to yell our reservation number over the sounds of a DJ playing Do the Hustle for a group of well-dressed revelers dancing near the fireplace beyond the front desk. While I was amused, I was also concerned the loud music from the office party was going to be annoying during our stay. Happily, my fears were completely unfounded. All noise magically disappeared as soon as I stepped into the elevator.
That night we stayed in a fairly generic, standard room. It had all the basic amenities that we expected but none of the individuality of the hotel's exterior. We could've been in any number of large chain hotels and not known the difference except for the blue Wyndham logos stamped on the coffee mugs. Still, our room was certainly comfortable, and we enjoyed our stay. We especially liked the breakfast buffet the next morning. We’re talking grits and bacon here, not just cold bagels and coffee! (Not included in most room rates. The full service restaurant has pasta buffets from 11am-2pm weekdays and serves dinner 5-10pm.)
In 2004, I had the opportunity to visit the Wyndham again. Room 107 had a sliding door that went directly out to the pool. With a sink and coffee maker separate from the bathroom as well as a plushy chair for reclining, the space felt larger than my earlier room.
Neighborhood Notes:
Vinings is one of my favorite sections of Atlanta. Snuggled between 285 and the Chattahoochee River, visitors will find a neighborhood full of charming shops, five star restaurants, and beautiful homes. Real estate in the tree-lined neighborhoods starts at around 300k, and then you're either getting a closet or a fixer-upper . . . The Vinings Jubilee shops are a great place to wile away an afternoon.
Bottom line:
The Wyndham is a nice hotel that caters to business travelers. Rates are often cheaper on the weekends. However, the nice pool, the Golden Door bath products, the restaurant, charming neighborhood, and the friendly staff combine to make this a good lodging choice for anyone visiting Atlanta.
