An Excellent Hostel in Sofia

We had looked at hostelbookers.com website and they had a wide variety of hostels to choose from to stay in Sofia as well as other destinations. Though we had already booked a flight to Sofia, and we realised that the Hostel Mostel was the top rated hostel in Sofia, and the 6th highest rated hostel in Eastern Europe. These claims were taken from the hostelbookers.com website. We decided to stay two nights out of four that we had planned to stay in Sofia. On the booking website, we had our reservation confirmed back in January, we paid a 10% deposit, and we were not asked for the full balance, until our stay was over. This helped us greatly in terms of budgeting as well as we felt that this was a kind gesture, as most accomodation you have to pay straight away. Our final balance paid amount was 101 Bulgarian lev, which covered me and my brother for two nights, in this well located and interesting hostel. In English Pounds, this equates to around £45.

Getting There

People with bookings can arrange a taxi which should cost no more than 15 lev from the Sofia airport. The address of the Hostel Mostel is number 2A, Makedonian Boulevard.

Decor Ambience

The reception and communal areas are well decorated with nice yellow and white designed ceilings, the walls are largely white in colour. The floor tiles are strangely brick blocked tiles. There is also good seating available in the communal areas and the lighting is also interesting, in that they use strange lamp shade decorations. There is also a no shoes seating area where guests can watch television. On the whole I did not mind the decorations as these are finished to a good standard with a young travelling party in mind. The bedroom are painted in a nice neutral yellow colour which I did like.

Naturally this place has in my view plenty of character, history as well as great facilities. The one thing that needs to be done is some more improvement works in the skirting boards, and regarding the heating, although we were not bothered about the weather too much as we used most of our time in exploring Sofia, despite the snowy conditions.

Bedroom

The bedroom was nicely decorated although the room had no skirting boards. The panel heating was to the far side of the room, and came on during the evenings. We were supplied with two clean towels although they were quite small in size. The bed albeit basic and comfortable I would say on the whole were nicely positioned in the room. The two windows to the left of the room show the old fashioned style above the panel heaters. We had a good quality locker room which we used to store our bags and valuables. The bed had a pillow which was a good quality one, and the bed also had a rather strange blanket cover which I did not like. We were also impressed that we could choose bunk beds or the single beds. I decided to stay in the single bed. This location was very quiet and other guests were respectful as well. The Hostel also had a no noise curfew after 9pm as well as they also had CCTV facilities which were evident at the reception area.
The shower facilties were very good indeed, we liked the good power shower and we liked the really clean soft water that can be found in Sofia. I felt the difference when I had a shower and the facilties for showering were excellent. It was a slight shame that the W.C was next door to our room, though for the price of our stay this was a very small incovenience indeed.

Service

We found the Bulgarian receptionist to be excellent in her helpfulness. She greeted and welcomed us with a nice warm welcome, she took our passports and confirmed our booking details quite quickly. She also took the time to give us a free map of Central Sofia, as well as showing us how to get to the best recommended restaurants in Sofia, as well as the best one's that are close to the Hostel Mostel. We also asked the receptionist, why the rooms were cold, and we were told that the room panel heating gets turned on at 9pm, and runs until around 9am. We found her exceptionally professionally tidy, and well organised. We also were told of the time of the breakfast and the spaghetti dinner if we also liked to receive free food as well. The Internet facilities were fast Internet and this was running throughout the day and night. We asked another member questions such as other recommended places to visit in Bulgaria, and he also was polite and friendly, in suggesting that we visit Varna as opposed to Burgas. On the Hostel Mostel website, there were book marks of interesting places to visit outside of Sofia, and we learned that the Hostel Mostel also operate in the old capital of Bulgaria. We visited the train station in the north side of Sofia and we also discovered the potential to travel to other interesting European destinations via coach or trains such as Istanbul, North Greece, Romania and many more places.

The breakfast served at around 8am included a small and interesting selection. We could have muesli with cold milk, there were also toast, jam, olives, live yoghurt, nicely sliced cheese, salami, tomatoe. This was included in the price as well as the dinner option which included a well cooked spaghetti dish with plenty of tomatoe sauce dressing. We tried both and we were satisfied both in terms of quantity as well as quality.

The slight negatives were that the breakfast was not comprehensive and varied enough, and similarly with the dinner choice which was basic. We also tried restaurants around the town which also provided us some excellent dining indeed, which I shall review seperately. The breakfast was however better in terms of quantity as during our first two night's stay at the Hostel Gulliver, we were given just a small croissant which was processed by a company called 'Seven days'.

Overall our room security was excellent as similar to most Hotels anywhere in fact, that they have a key card system. We felt that the facilities were very private and secure. The only other thing I did not like was that we had no W.C in the room, though we had easy access next door which had further shower and W.C facilities.

We were also pleased that the hotel staff arranged our departure taxi to the airport and did this free of charge. We were also billed the 101 lev upon exit of the building, and we were told that our booking card details that we used as a deposit would be destroyed upon the receipt of the payment.
An enjoyable stay and very interesting.

-Better Quality hostel compared to the Hostel Gulliver
-Close to restaurants and Mall of Sofia
-Locker wardrobe big enough to fit small ruck sacks.
-Good character rooms
-Near the action of Sofia
-Excellent service given by female receptionist
-Wi fi and three computers provide fast Internet (free of charge)
-We watched a Champions league match in the communal area which we were pleased about.
-Communal seating areas varied, comfortable and interesting
-Interesting lighting choices displayed by the owners
-Free pool table, which was unfortunately not in good condition

Value for Money

We paid 101 lev, for two nights in the Hostel Mostel, and we thought this was a really good price to pay. I liked the quality of the facilities in general. I also liked the use of free Internet, as well as the rooms which were warm during the evening and the night. The location of the Hostel Mostel, gave us very easy access to see some good value restaurants, and is also close walking distance to the Mall of Sofia, as well as the National Palace of Culture. Our stay was affected by the snowy weather somewhat though we had covered most of the important places of interest in our previous hostel stay at Hostel Gulliver. We found that this was a better and more interesting place to stay compared to the Hostel Gulliver, as the facilities were better, and there was a communal seating area which the Hostel Gulliver did not. We also found that the Hostel Mostel had excellent reception staff who helped us out a lot, and this high level of service was not on a same level at the Hostel Gulliver. Close
