Description: Our lodging for our stay in Durban was the Hilton Durban Hotel located next to the Durban Convention Center. It is a first-class hotel with amenities galore - shops, fitness center, business center, restaurants, etc. We had a nice, spacious room with a queen-sized bed, refrigerator, and marble bathroom counter tops. Although our room overlooked the parking lot of the convention center, it offered a nice view of the Durban skyline. Our travel companions had a room on an upper floor that faced the Indian Ocean. They said the view was magnificent.
The bellman brought our luggage to our room and then gave us a quick tour of the room. Although, most of the things he pointed out were obvious (telephone, television remote control, closet, etc.), he did manage to pass on some very useful information - namely, the location of a spare electrical outlet and which converter to use. The converter I brought with me could fit the receptacles in Johannesburg and Kapama; however, it would not fit the ones in Durban, Cape Town, or Sun City. The bellman went downstairs to the front desk and brought us the correct converter that allowed us to recharge our camera batteries.
Since we were in Durban for only one night, we did not have much time to take advantage of the many amenities this hotel offers. We did browse the two gift shops. They offered many of the same items we'd seen in other South African cities. These items included Zulu bead work, carvings, safari clothing, as well as, postcards, fridge magnets, and t-shirts.
My wife and I used the high-speed Internet connections in the business center to check email. Although we never saw any rates posted and did not need a password to use the PCs, we found out from the lady at the business center desk as we were leaving that there is a fee to use the computers. We apologized and assured her we were not purposely leaving without paying. Before we could ask how much we owed, she told us not to worry about it and wished us a pleasant evening.
I totally enjoyed my stay at the Hilton Durban Hotel. It is a classy establishment with a staff focused on providing comfort and convenience. I very highly recommend this hotel.
