We were very pleasantly surprised with our first introduction to the "Junk". As we were only carrying rucksacks we went straight to our berth on the lower deck. Room 107 had a very pleasant and roomy bedroom with a double bed "at centre stage". We were surprised to see a large Sony TV and DVD player in the room together with a fridge and limited but sufficient storage area for our one night stay on board.
The bathroom was roomy with a huge Jacuzzi bath, but no shower facilities. Never mind perhaps I’ll enjoy a relaxing bath after the day’s activities.
Of course we wouldn’t be spending too much time in the bedroom as our cruise around the bay was only 24 hours and there was a fairly full itinerary, which we intended to make full use of. So having dumped our possessions in the bedroom we headed off for first meal on board the boat. The dining room had tables set out for the size of the party so we had a very pleasant table for four overlooking the river – ideal for poking our heads out of the window for a photo opportunity. There were to be plenty of those and soon we distracted ourselves from the view to enjoy the food. There was soup, salads, spring rolls, fish dishes, pork, beef and chicken. We had potatoes, vegetables and rice and some sweet dishes to have a go at when we’d finished with the savoury. A great start for our cruise, before climbing to the top deck to enjoy the sunshine and the terrific views around this amazing area.
After a time we were invited to ship’s activities whilst daylight prevailed and we managed to see a great sunset over the bay before seeing our second sight of the tour (see separate review of our off boat experiences on day one).
Now you’ll remember that I mentioned a relaxing bath earlier in this review. Well I’d used up a bit of energy and I was looking forward to a Jacuzzi. I started to fill the bath with water but after a long time I assumed that there was a problem as it would not fill beyond a certain level. I got out of the bath and flicked the switch to operate the Jacuzzi and then slid bath into the bath to enjoy the moment. The mechanism seemed to be working OK as the jets groaned and water began to ooze out of them. It’s all looking good I thought until.....
The jets seemed to switch to high power and water was cascaded out of the jet-holes above the water line. Water shot everywhere except into the bath and soon the bathroom resembled a wet room. I too shot out of the bath to turn off the supply of electricity as I proved my inability to control this device from the control panel at the side of the bath. So my relaxing bath turned into a fight with technology and an enforced washing of my clothes! Never again (I’d had a similar Jacuzzi experience in a hotel in Blackpool when the foam reached a good four feet above the rim of the bath). I was only reassured when I heard that our friends had had a similar experience with their Jacuzzi!
A quick relax on the bed before we headed upstairs for the evening banquet with "more courses than you could swing a cat at". There was a hors d’oeuvre, king prawns, soup, a three fish dish, chicken and black rice, pudding followed by coffee. There was loads of it and all of real good quality. We had a couple of bottles of wine (one red and one white) to "help with our digestion" we had a great night chatting over the dinner table.
What a relaxing time on our Paradise Cruise.
