Choosing a restaurant in Dusseldorf is no easy task, but for the right reasons. There are so many to choose from and, I have to say, that most looked to be very good with appealing offers and friendly staff trying to persuade you to go in to eat. On a reasonably warm April evening we took our time making a choice and as a result found that most outdoor tables were occupied so when we’d decided on the AltStadt restaurant we had to take a table indoors. We didn’t mind too much though we did have to take the table furtherest from the door and as a result felt a little cut off from the rest of the restaurant. The interior may be a little dim and dated but it was comfortable and we were quite ...Read More

To say that Düsseldorf diners are spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants is an understatement. In the city centre there are streets and streets of restaurants and cafes representing cuisines from all over the globe and we found making a decision very difficult. On our first night we had eaten in a German restaurant (that also had a few Balkan specialities on the menu I was interested to note) and for our second night we wanted something different. After some discussion we plumped for Ponte Vecchio, an Italian restaurant in a narrow lane just off Berger Strasse. Most Düsseldorf restaurants have conveniently placed menus outside but it was the specials listed on a chalk board that gr...Read More

Courtesy of a well known travel website, I had at my disposal two nights accommodation free of charge in a suite in Dusseldorf's Mercure Am Seestern. It's worth mentioning that my first attempt to redeem the offer resulted in a terse email telling me they wouldn't honour my voucher. After discussion with said website I tried again and this time I was sent an email confirming a stay of one night; after another exchange of emails I received confirmation of a reservation for two nights. We were flying in to Dusseldorf Airport and I checked the hotel website to see how to reach the hotel from there. The website mentioned a free shuttle service so I contacted the hotel by email, advising them o...Read More

With a giant fibreglass mustard pot standing at the front doors, Dusseldorf’s Mustard Museum is easy to find. It’s actually situated at the back of the Loewensenf mustard shop on Bergerstrasse, a minutes walk from the Old Town Hall in the heart of Dusseldorf. To be fair the museum is more of a lure than a genuine attraction – quite simply, they want to entice you there in the hope you’ll buy some mustard; however, the miniature exhibition about the methods used for processing the grains and turning them into a jar of mustard is nicely put together and actually very interesting. The Loewensenf company has been associated with Dusseldorf since the thirties but actually originated in what is ...Read More

Since the tower is easy to see from any part of the city it might seem like a bit daft to ask how to get to the Rheinturm but if you are short of time, or can't walk very far (or just don't wish to) you might be glad to know that there are a couple of bus stops very close to the tower. It's also one of the stops on the hop on/hop off open top bus tour. For those who do wish to walk, then it's a lovely fifteen minute stroll from the Altstadt along the Rhine Promenade to the tower. There's a car-park beside the building, and spaces to lock up bicycles too. Admittedly the Rheinturm is not the most attractive building in Düsseldorf (and juxtaposed against the splendid architecture in the Media...Read More

Düsseldorf - That's Living Alright!

Story/Tip

The Old Town Hall Photo - Düsseldorf, Germany

Its name may translate as the 'village on the Dussel' but these days it's hard to imagine Düsseldorf as anything other than a sprawling modern metropolis; it blends almost imperceptibly with nearby Duisberg and Dortmund and is just a stone's throw from magnificent Cologne to the south. Düsseldorf has almost 600,000 inhabitants but merits just three pages or so in my massive Rough Guide to Germany. So is Düsseldorf worth a visit, or is it merely a soulless hub for commerce in northern Germany? Admittedly the Altstadt, or Old Town, is quite small, especially in comparison with the rest of the city; however there are a few interesting older buildings, some of which have been rebuilt exactly a...Read More
