A friendly three-star hotel situated in the Kazimierz district, easily contacted in English both on the net and personally by phone. This is a traditional Jewish hotel and thus added to the attraction of staying in the area, especially on Fridays. The breakfast was poor but that would be my only complaint, there are some nice breakfast venues nearby. Try the Moment Cafe Bar.The hotel has large rooms with average furnishings, cable tv, and a unique downstairs bar: Ye Olde Goat. It offers more facilities than most in its price range, ranging from a Salt Grotto to Sauna and Massages. It also has a traditional Mikvah. Note the thank you messages on some of the posters in the hallwa...Read More

Ul Szeroka and its square offers a variety of Jewish dining, so making a choice on my first night was purely by eye and ear. I was looking for somewhere traditional with a little live music. Ariel was a delight. Arriving in -12C before wind chill, I was immediately offered a rosehip tea with vodka to ‘warm up’; a wonderful start to a fantastic evening. The food and service were traditional Jewish with a tint towards game: see the menu (http://www.ariel.ceti.pl/?page=me&lan=en), truly sumptuous. I was even offered Kosher Vodka.Music begins around 8pm and the band were, again, of traditional Jewish origin. Close your eyes and you can just feel the emotion and history of these walls s...Read More

Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp, Memorial and Museum

Although not a pleasant day out, a trip to the infamous death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau is a must on anyone’s itinerary. I went on a day trip organised by Krakow Tours and frankly would not recommend them. There was too little time to cover the ground, and no time at all for reflection or contemplation.I would suggest taking the train from the main Krakow station and using a bus or taxi from there. There are two sites worth seeing, Auschwitz 1 (originally a Polish Army barracks), and the main Birkenau death camp two miles away. (A bus runs between the two sites)Start at Auschwitz 1 amongst the inoffensive barrack buildings, which give no clue as to the horrific history that took p...Read More

Chilling in Kazimierz (Plac Nowy)

Story/Tip

Tanked up in Brewerie!! Photo - Krakow, Poland
Quote:
Around Plac Nowy are a series of bars set into old houses so, on arriving, you are greeted with a series of rooms, rather like the snugs in pubs in the North of England but with more character. Here are a number of choices,Singer: No more than a couple of rooms full of sewing machines. (Could be useful!) Atmospheric but crowded.Alchemia: A blast of classic moody Led Zep greeted my arrival in this haunting, classic, candlelit establishment with rooms seeming going on for ever out the back. Very nice choice.Brewerie: Two character rooms with the highlight being the large fishtank out back. The bar plays chill out sounds and is the friendliest of the three. I just s...Read More
