Summer vacation, 2000

Overview

Quote:
We saw lighthouses, campgrounds, the Wisconsin Dells, a Lake Michigan car ferry, and lot more.

Quick Tips:

We took the car ferry from Ludington to Manitowoc, and travelled by car throughout the region. Plan early if you are going, the car ferry and campgrounds fill up fast!

Best Way To Get Around:

Our van served us nicely in travelling throughout the region, although a 4-wheel drive could have enabled us to see more of the wilder areas.

The campsites were very large and well drained. The camp store was fairly well stocked, and the laundrymat was convenient. The swimming beach left something to be desired, it was small and not well maintained.

Michigan State parks tend to be somewhat suburban, even as campsites, with units packed very closely. The staff was helpful, the nearby fort was interesting, and the facilities overall were good. Be prepared for bear problems, i.e. keep all food locked inside your car or RV, and don''t encourage bears by feeding them.

This is a scenic tour of the upper dells. Passengers get to see most of the area from the comfort of a small ferry boat, with one or more guides talking about the history and geography of the area. Highlights on our tour were Witches Gulch and Stand Rock. The stop at Witches Gulch allowed passengers to walk around for about one-half hour, which was a nice change of pace. The stop at Stand Rock was a bit more strenuous, but also interesting.

The tour we went on below the dam (the lower dells) was on amphibious vehicles that once belonged to the U.S. military. The trip was not quite as scenic as the upper dells tour, but it had more variety. We saw several forest settings, including several deer. We saw other natural wonders, and we entered/left the water in several places in the "duck" we rode.

Quote:
The access to Copper Harbor Lighthouse could be done by land, except all surrounding land is privately owned. The State Park service has provided access to the lighthouse via the city's marina and an $11 tour. The 1-2 hour tour involves a quick ferry ride to the point, and about an hour on the lighthouse grounds. A ranger on duty give a brief explanation of the lighthouse history and the geological sights of the grounds. Visitors are allowed 30 minutes or so to tour the house/museum and grounds by themselves.

The museum is quite new, with several nice exhibits. We wanted to learn about lighthouses, and they had lots to tell about them. The museum was also the base for the Ship Canal tours, and that was a most enjoyable tour as well.

Camping at Lake Winnebago

The campground we found, courtesy of Wisconsin State Park rangers, was Calumet County Park. It is a fairly small campground, situated on the eastern side of Lake Winnebago. Like the state parks, it is also very popular, and we could only book a camp site with electricity until Friday, as the electric sites were already booked for the whole weekend. We decided to camp for 3 days, and head up north early. The campground has about 50(?) or so sites, some right on the lake, but most just off the lake. They also have a camp store, laundry mat, and bathing beach, sort of. What we saw of the beach was not overly inviting. Near one picnic area is a public entrance to the lake. The lake here is a little...Read More

To the Dells!

On the map, the trip from Lake Winnebago to the small dot labelled Wisconsin Dells doesn't appear to be far. Of course, when you start the day sleeping in a bit, and then lazily get the morning business done, the whole day seems to go a bit slower. And, don't forget the inevitable side trip while I get lost for an hour or so. Whatever the reasons, we did not arrive at the dot until late one August morning. Even as we were approaching the town, we had little clue what we were getting into. Then, quite suddenly... it appears. To some, it might be the world's biggest tourist trap. To others, the town and surrounding area are full of history and nature. My wife and I fell somewhere in the middle of the tw...Read More

Sturgeon Bay or Bust

My wife, Deb, doesn't like the title I chose for this story. We certainly didn't bust anything, least of all our tails as we slept in and took our time getting out and about. We didn't make it up to the area around Green Bay until about noon, even though it was only an hour or so from our campground. We went looking for a casino we knew to be in the area, but, of course, I got us lost (again? no, always!). With the help from the "locals" we did find one such casino. I get the impression there are several around, but with my sense of direction, we didn't press our luck. We obviously didn't strike it rich, or else we would be enjoying Hawaii or someplace Caribbean, instead of our wonderful Michigan wint...Read More

There were several reasons why Deb and I wanted to go to the Keweenaw peninsula in northernmost Michigan. It was the only county in Michigan that I hadn't been in. Deb had family and friends who had seen it, and recommended it highly. Neither of us had ever seen a bear in the wild, and figured this might be our best chance. It was almost too good a chance. For a change, I didn't get lost as we made our way from our Calumet County camp beside Lake Winnebago north to Michigan's upper peninsula. We might have stayed on course because I had just made about half the trip a day or two earlier when we visited Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Then again, using US 141 from Green Bay to Crystal Falls, it almost s...Read More

One Scenic Trip!

As I mentioned in previous articles, there are at least three ways to get to Copper Harbor, Michigan, by land. M26 is a state road that skirts Lake Superior and comes into the town from the northwest. US41 starts in Miami, Florida, and ends north of Copper Harbor after going through the middle of the Keweenaw peninsula. Brockway Mountain Scenic Drive, as the name would suggest, is a scenic road that splits the two highways mentioned above. One end of the Drive is just outside Copper Harbor; the other end is east of Eagle Harbor on M26. We took the drive on a brisk, breezy day in August of 2000, thinking the scenery would blow us away. Mother Nature almost blew us away instead. The start of the s...Read More

Keweenaw Lighthouses, or lost again!

Quote:
One of our main objectives for this summer's vacation was to see lighthouses. Door County was our first choice. As a peninsula which separates Green Bay from Lake Michigan, it has 11 lighthouses listed in one book I saw. We only saw three of them, partly due to my late planning. Campgrounds in Wisconsin, at least state park campgrounds, seem to fill up fast. We had to camp near Lake Winnebago. It worked out well in one way. There are lots of neat things to see and do there, too. It didn't work out so well for the lighthouse objectives. Touring the Keweenaw worked out better for us that way. Just driving the state route to Copper Harbor will get you within sight of at least two lighthouses. Eagle...Read More

The trip to Montreal River Falls started innocently enough. We had seen signs around Copper Harbor advertising nature tours. We went to where the signs told us to go, and thought we had arranged a half day tour for the following Monday. We really wanted a weekend trip, but the naturalist felt there were too many tourists in the woods then, so he preferred weekday trips. Who were we to argue? Maybe we shouldn't have argued, but we should have checked out the trip a bit more. Let the buyer beware, ya know what I mean? Monday morning, at 9 a.m., we went back to the store where we signed up, but it wasn't open. It seems they like to sleep in a bit, or take it nice and easy, like they are on vacatio...Read More

My wife and I must be gluttons for punishment because we seem to find more ways to get up early on vacation than anyone I know. Two years ago, when we took a cruise, we tacked on a tour of DC at the end. On the cruise, we had to get up early a couple of times for day trips at port stops. In DC, we got up about 5 a.m. twice to take bus tours of the U.S. Capitol area. So what did we do this year? We got up about 2 a.m. so we could drive across Michigan to be in Ludington by the 7 a.m. departure for the car ferry across Lake Michigan. I guess someone forgot to tell us that vacations are for resting, not early rising. The trip across the Michigan was almost more excitement than we had planned. Someo...Read More

Copper Harbor to Munising

With our vacation time winding down, we reluctantly packed up our campsite and headed toward Munising. The town, about halfway across the Upper Peninsula on the southern shore, was to be a short stop before heading home. On the way, we continued to see how often I could get lost looking for lighthouses. The first lighthouse pictured was not even listed in our lighthouse book. The L'Anse Indian Country Sports Lighthouse is a homemade lighthouse which has been approved by the Coast Guard. The owner once had his business nearby, but wanted to rebuild. He had always said (to himself or others, I'm not sure) that when he did rebuild, it would include a lighthouse. He did exactly that, and was...Read More
