There is loads to see in and around the Landes region of France. Its tucked right up close to the Spanish border and we did make a long tortuous journey up the Pyrenees to the single municipality of Andorra. It was a strange experience as we left beautiful sunshine behind us and climbed high into the mountains before being enveloped in a tight swirl of mountain fog. It was impossible to see much at all and as there were sheer drops I did not really enjoy this part of the journey. Over the top and we started our descent before coming to a grinding halt in the midst of an horrendous traffic jam. It seems thousands of people were intent on the same journey in search of duty free merchandise. To be honest...Read More

I can’t claim that we made a pilgrimage to the town of Lourdes, but it felt like an epic journey--with our youngest son suffering from a couple of horrendous mosquito bites on his face, resulting in a painfully swollen cheek; and our eldest with stomach cramps, and an expressed need for us to stop the car with alarming regularity. According to the "font of all knowledge" (our youngest), there have been 90 "verified cures" at Lourdes over the years, and this is all down to the kindliness of St. Bernadette. We parked at the top of the hill in a large visitor’s car park, and followed the multitude of tourists down the hill. We were staggered to see some of the most amazingly tatty souvenir sho...Read More

It’s fantastic to think that a poor peasant girl inspired the building of this spectacular, fairy-tale church in southern France. Bernadette, the eldest of nine children, had eighteen separate apparitions of the Virgin Mary from January to July 1858 and the Church was so impressed that they rapidly convened a committee and by 1862 had endorsed the apparitions. To begin with there was a regular trickle of local people making their personal pilgrimage to the now sacred site (approximately 30,000 a year) taking the spring water from the cave where the first vision had appeared and praying in or near to this grotto. By 1876 the first basilica was built directly above the grotto and the first sig...Read More

St Jean de Luz nestles right onto the Spanish border and, if you were travelling further south, is the start of Basque country. This old town has great beaches, an interesting port a busy artist’s square and a fascinating church. We were fortunate to be able to park on a street (instinct telling us that we were near enough to the harbour to walk) and had a pleasant meander through the residential areas of the town. The "petit train" was in full operation and the main harbour road was crowded with people visiting a market and craft fair. There was a hubbub as we jostled our way through the crowds and we finally ended up in what we chose to call "artist’s square". This was a hive of indust...Read More

Around 10km from Saint Jean-de-Luz, between the typically Pyrenean villages of Ascain and Sare, is the departure station of the “petit train de la Rhune.” This train route was built in 1924 and this well maintained wooden tracked train runs every 35 minutes from 10am to 3pm. A return journey will cost you €13; but this is for a 35-minute journey on an historic train, up a well-used route, through some of the most beautiful countryside. The pace is slow (the train is incapable of travelling any faster than 8km an hour), but that is perfect to take in the sights. The great thing about this small rack railway is that the restoration of the engine and carriages is fully authentic. The wooden construc...Read More
