Quote: My wife and I were looking for an inexpensive getaway to celebrate my birthday. We wanted something with a few sights to see, good weather, reasonable transportation expense, nice accomodations, and availability on short notice. Vancouver and the surrounding area had it all, and lots more besides.

Overview

This is one destination that can be enjoyed in many different ways. There are so many things to see and do that you would either have to live here or return many times to take advantage of it all. If shopping is your bag, go downtown to Pacific Center or to Gastown (see the world's first steam clock at the corner of Cambie and Water Streets), or go to North Vancouver to Lonsdale Quay Market & Shops. If you seek natural settings, visit the Capilano Suspension Bridge, Lighthouse Park, Lynn Canyon Park, Grouse Mountain, and Cypress Mountain. The Vancouver Aquarium, located in Stanley Park, has over 8,000 aquatic animals and features Orca, Beluga, and dolphin shows. While in Stanley Park, check out the 10...Read More

Best Things Nearby:You can visit historic Gastown or shop in sleek new malls. Stanley Park and Lighthouse Park offer great nature walks. The cultural scene includes plays, ballet, opera, movies, over 100 contemporary art galleries and the Vancouver Art Gallery. Golfing and skiing are nearby, as well as scuba diving (no kidding).Best Things About the Resort:Location, location, location! It is located on several upper floors of a high-rise apartment building in the rejuvenated downtown area. Two elevators provide quick access to your "home above the city".Resort Experience:The one-bedroom condominium we occupied was compact by WorldMark standards but provided pl...Read More

The Capilano Suspension Bridge is Vancouver's oldest attraction and one of its most popular. Walking across the bridge's swaying planks 230 feet above the Capilano River is a real thrill. The bridge was originally a hemp-rope-and-cedar-plank bridge built in 1889 by George Grant Mackay. Through the years, the ownership has changed several times, with each new owner adding his own ideas to the facility. Today you will find the 1911 tea house converted to a restaurant and gift shop, with natives carving totem poles, antique household items, and appliances and guided tours on the trails through the woods on the west side of the bridge. The admission rate for adults is $21.95, while seniors and students pa...Read More

Robert Pim Butchart and his wife, Jenny, built their home here in 1904, to be near his thriving business of manufacturing Portland cement. When the limestone quarry near their house was exhausted, Jenny decided to refurbish the ugly pit by hauling in topsoil and planting a flower garden in it. This became the Sunken Gardens. Later, they added Japanese gardens, Italian gardens, and rose gardens. Butchart Gardens is now a 55-acre floral extravaganza where a played-out limestone quarry used to be. From March to October, you will find the gardens in bloom with various types of flowers. In the summer, on Saturday evenings, they have fireworks displays, and evenings find the gardens decoratively lighted. "B...Read More

From our condo at the Canadian (WorldMark the Club Resort) in downtown Vancouver, we drove to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, where we boarded a ferry for the 1-hour and 35-minute trip to Swartz Bay at Vancouver Island. The fares were $8.25 per adult, $4.25 per child, and $25 per car. After disembarking, we drove south to the world-famous Butchart Gardens, where we toured the 55-acre property with its many extraordinary gardens and, Benvenuto, the Butchart home. After a few hours, we left and drove south through some beautiful scenery to Victoria, the capital city. We went directly to the Inner Harbour, where we parked and took about 50 digital pictures of the quaint, historical city before going i...Read More
