Going Down in Sri Lanka

Overview

The dive season in Sri Lanka starts in November... but if monsoons are still around, you wont be able to go out in the Indian Ocean. Finally, after 3 weekends in Nov. the weather cleared and I got to get wet off the shore of Negombo. This area is a fishing village, not as upmarket as the southern beaches but you can get alot of value for your money on these beaches.

Quick Tips:

Sri Lanka has beautiful beaches.. but going topless is against the law.

Best Way To Get Around:

Tuk Tuks, tours and drivers. But in the hotel strip walking is OK.

Well the Taj it is not. This hotel has a few Bungalows on the beachside or rooms. The rooms are clean, not modernized,(no TV, mini-bar or hairdryer) but if all you are looking for is a place to sleep then it''''s acceptable. At the hotel there is also a pool and restaurant.

We stayed in a bungalow on the beach, and had to watch out for mosquitos... eventually we ran the front desk to get a mosquito zapper. Another thing, there was a special switch which had to be turned on in order to gain hot water service.

Oasis Beach Resort (Hotel) is a beach front accomodation. They are not affiliated with any tour groups and the facilities are only about 25 rooms. Although the rooms may not be brand spanking new, the hotel can pride themselves on keeping them clean. The beds were not the most comfortable things I have ever slept in, but they did supply misquito netting. Facilities: airconditioning, restaurant, bar,& pool. One thing I did like was the 2nd storey varandah to sun bathe... this allowed me to escape the beach peddlers when I needed some sanity. The cost of a room is about $30/night (double) including breakfast. The hotel also has a great restaurant (see Fish & Lobster Restaurant journa...Read More

Although my journal says local cuisine and seafood, they are not the only foods offered here but they are their specialties. The dining area is situated on a ground-level, enclosed verrandah in which the beach side veiws are seen through "french doors"... these doors are left open during the hours of operation unless the weather is not so good. The restaurant serves breakfast lunch and dinner. And if you get hungry at anytime between 6 am and 2am, the chef is more than happy to cook something up for you. I ate one of the best lobsters ever here... freshly caught that morning. It was displayed on a plate with veggies, salads and potatoes like a cruise ship meal. My dinner with a drink (alc...Read More

Dive Site: 3RD REEF Depth: 56 ft Water Temp: 84 F The dive started out by carrying your gear across the beach to a 15ft (wooden), 2 engine "speed" boat. After all the gear was stowed everyone on the dive then helped push the boat off the sand and into the ocean. The dive site was 20km off shore: I couldn't see any land anywhere. On the ride out, we happed to come across a school of dolphins (my guess was 60 -100 of them) The dive site was named 3rd Reef, I would not exactly call it a reef... it was more of a sand bottom with live rock and a bit of coral. What the site did have to offer was an enormous amount of fish and invertebrea life. - Blue Starfish and Tan St...Read More

Time on the beach of Negombo can be fun or it can be annoying. The beach is flooded with locals pedaling their goods and occasionally a beggar or two. I learned to have fun with the people bargaining for the best price, and getting into a conversation with them. They really appreciate that someone acknowledges them. One of my favorite peddlers was the snake charmer... He allowed me to handle his python, king cobra, the baby king cobra (6 weeks old)and his pet monkey. On this beach you will also be asked if you would like to go out on one of the local fishing boats...just remember bargain for the best price. Shell collecting needs to be done early... as many tourists and locals comb this beach...Read More
