Sound of Music in Salzburg

Overview

Quote:
See the house where Mozart spent his childhood. Have a coffee in Café Glockenspiel and wait for the clock to chime. Walk through Mirabellgarten. A visit to the village of Mondsee and a cake at the Mondsee rest stop are musts.Quick Tips: Get in early if you want a coffee at Café Glockenspiel. It gets crowded, particularly on a warm sunny day. Visit the Hohensalzburg Fortress, a hard walk uphill on foot or easily accessed by the funicular railway departing from the Festungsgasse.Best Way To Get Around: There is only one option for exploring the old part of Salzburg across the river-walking. Narrow streets open out onto squares with cafés, each having a place outside to enjoy a coffee a...Read More

Restop Mondsee is 30km from Salzburg, of festival fame, and 5km from the market town of Mondsee. Although not in Salzburg, this rest stop has views over the lake used in the film "The Sound of Music." The cakes were superb, the coffee was...well, Austrian (filtered coffee with a large amount of whipped cream floating on top and sprinkled with chocolate)! I love coffee, but the Austrian version took some getting used to, and my arteries are glad we are home! We managed to find a seat on the balcony, looking out over the lake. The view is stunning. I don't know which was the better feature, the cake or the view. Both were thoroughly enjoyed! If you are heading into or out of Sa...Read More

We stopped here for a coffee and a cake and to soak in the atmosphere of Mozart Square. The Cafe Glockenspiel is also the best place to listen to the Glockenspiel (carillion) at the Residenz, which can be heard at 11am and 6pm every day. We managed to find a seat outside before 11am. The coffee was good, and in Salzburg, there are sufficient coffee shops to suggest that coffee is an important part of the locals' lives. The cakes were also good, as one would expect. The popularity of Glockenspeil was only partly due to its location. The coffee and cakes were as good as any we had in Austria. It is, though, the place to sit on a sunny day, particularly if you like to watch the world go b...Read More

"Salzburg Castle (Festung Hohensalzburg) stands on the Mönchsberg, a 400 foot hill overlooking the beautiful Austrian city of Salzburg. It is Europe’s largest fully-preserved castle but, despite its great age (over 900 years), it has little history, as it was never attacked and only occupied once when it was surrendered to Napoleon without a fight. It was built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard as a refuge in the midst of a controversy between the pope and the king as to who had the right to appoint bishops. The fortifications were expanded in the early 12th century." It can be visited today and is reached either by a funicular railway, built in 1892, or a hard slog up the hill and has tr...Read More

While not a part of Salzburg (clearly), it is so close to the great music city in Austria that a trip across the border into Germany can easily be managed. Kehlsteinhaus (tea house), also known as the Eagles Nest, was built as a 15th birthday present for Hitler. It is an amazing engineering feat, perched as it is on the top of the mountain overlooking Salzburg, Austria and Berchtesgarten, Germany. Access to Hitler's tea house is via a very narrow road and can only be done using the buses provided (no private motoring here!). The road itself is almost as impressive an engineering feat as the building perched on the top of the mountain. The winding road can only go so far, and it ends ...Read More

Mozart's birthplace Photo - Salzburg, Austria

Our Salzburg guide commenced the tour in Mirabell gardens, where Maria and the children sang "Do-Re-Me." From there we went across the river to the Old Town. Here we saw Mozart's birthplace on Getreidegasse no. 9, where the Leopold Mozart family lived from 1747 to 1773. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here on January 27, 1756. The old city, and in particular the shopping lane of Getreidegasse, consists of high narrow houses tightly nestled together. The shops have a certain charm with their wrought-iron guild signs. (Look for the wrought-iron McDonald’s sign!) It is interesting to see a McDonald’s without the traditional yellow arches! Also in the Old Town is the statue of Mozart (by ...Read More
