The Unpatriotic July 4th Weekend - Montreal

    Overview

Six girls let loose in Montreal! Sounds like nothing but trouble, right? A group of six of us stayed in a suite at McGill University to save some money. Smart idea if you don't mind reliving your dorm days. First full day - a picnic lunch after hitting an open-air market, shopping downtown, an afternoon in the Old Port, and barhopping. Second full day - Mont Royal, the Latin Quarter, Old Port for the galleries and local street vendors, and Jazz Festival.Quick Tips: The Jazz Festival is a yearly event that runs the first couple weeks of July. It is a must do!! There are tons of stages set up, letting you listen to lots of different bands. Lots of free concerts to check out. Not to be m...Read More

The atmosphere reminded me of the restaurants in Grand Case in St. Martin. The front of the restaurant was open to the street. It was very colorful and festive inside! The owner, a man from Italy, was very friendly and cheerful. He talked to my friends and me for several minutes, hoping to get us to come back for dinner. The meal was perfect for lunch. We shared a couple pizzas and each ordered a garden salad. The pizza was the best I've had. The crust was great- very buttery and just crisp enough. It makes my mouth water to think about it! Definitely worth a stop if you're looking for some familiar fare with a friendly atmosphere.

What an amazing festival! The festival takes up several blocks of the downtown and has several stages set up, varying in size. A small stage accommodated more traditional quintets. We also heard a funky Latin jazz band. One of the main stages was used for special events. We happened to catch the Four Tops. The next night's big act - Cirque du Soleil. The vendors were unusual - we enjoyed ripe mangos, cut to look like flowers. I felt like I was in the Caribbean again!! The souvenirs were very reasonably priced. For about $40, I got a boxed CD set, three other compilation CD's, a poster and book. Fantastic deal!! Everything was great and what we experienced was all free, though you could pay t...Read More

    Saint-Joseph's Oratory

    Attraction | "Oratoire St. Joseph"

As I flew into Montreal, the oratory caught my eye immediately after recognizing the Olympic Stadium. It's hard to miss, as it sits pretty high on Mont-Royal. The enormous copper dome is what really attracts the eye. Our guidebook dubbed the oratory one of the largest shrines in the world. There are over 300 steps to climb, but it was well worth the climb for a sense of completion. The inside is very dark and cave-like, but the exterior is beautiful and landscaping is perfect.
