Despite what I’ve read in other reviews, we had some of our favorite meals in all of Italy in Venice. Our favorite restaurant was just three blocks from Piazza San Marco.
Quick Tips:
The island sways a little, similar to what I would expect on a cruise ship. It took us a day or so to realize it wasn’t our delirium causing the feeling of movement. I found it very soothing, but if you get motion sickness, you may want to be prepared.
We got to spend an extra day in Venice because there was a train strike the day we planned to leave. They schedule strikes in advance, so if that’s your mode of transport, check for any signs in the station when you arrive.
Best Way To Get Around:
There are no cars on the island. Both the airport and train station are on mainland Italy, but the island of Venice is accessible only by water transportation - either water taxi or the waterbus ferry system.
Our hotel was near Piazza San Marco. A water taxi from the train station was 50 euros. The waterbus was 6 euros per person but took 40 minutes, as ours had to be the last stop. Ask someone at the ticket counter which bus you should take to which stop.
Once on the island, there will be porters asking to take your luggage on a dolly to your hotel for around 6 euros per bag. We succumbed to one, reasoning he would show us to our hotel. It worked, but using this method, be prepared to dodge people while running through the streets to keep up with the porter.
Once you deposit your luggage at the hotel, the best way to get around is by foot. Water taxis are convenient to get to other islands such as Murano, and you may want to take a gondola ride for the sheer pleasure of it, but for anything else, walking is the easiest.
