Walking the Waterfalls of North Georgia

Overview

A large number of waterfalls can be seen in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Georgia. They are very beautiful and many have historical aspects to Native Americans and to European explorers. To mention specific highlights, I could never do justice to the grandiloquence that is offered by the many other waterfalls in the area. There are thirteen major falls, including Toccoa Falls, Anna Ruby Falls, Duke's Creek Falls, DeSoto Falls, and Minnehaha Falls. These are just a few of the waterfalls that we have now seen. This an ongoing project that my wife and I will be undertaking for the next year or so. I am getting some needed exercise and some pretty pictures for my scrapbooks. Quick Tips:...Read More

US Highway 75 leads between the Georgia towns of Helen and Hiawassee. Those road traverses over Unicoi Gap in the North Georgia Mountains. Approximately half-way between the two towns is Forrest Service Road 283 on the eastern side. If you follow this road for about 1.3 miles, there is a parking area. We decided to look at this falls. We took a steep trail that led down to High Shoals Creek. Walking downstream about another mile, we came to Blue Hole Falls. A little bit further brought us to High Shoals. Both of these falls were dramatic. The only part of the trip that was the trails. At my age and poor physical conditioning I tired pretty quickly. However, the walk was worth the e...Read More

As you can see from the description of many of these journals about the waterfalls, most of them can be easily accessible from Helen. This, again is the case with Dukes Creek Falls. Actually, this falls is on Davis Creek, where it runs into Dukes Creek. Anna and I decided to drive along the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway (also known as Forrest Service Road 348), which is about 3 or 4 miles from Helen. It can easily be found by making a left/right jink just a bit north of the city. Once on the highway, there is a Dukes Creek Recreation Area sign about two miles to the north. There is a half-mile trail that switches back and forth three times leading to a set of three differe...Read More

One of the last waterfalls that we have seen in Northern Georgia is Horse Trough Falls. Most people are familiar with the Chattahoochee River, that runs through Atlanta, but few take the time to go see its headwaters in the mountains just to the north of Helen. This watershed falls is one of the first significant water that helps to form the river. Anna and I went up to Unicoi Gap along highway 75 North for about 8 miles from Helen. There, Forrest Service Road 44 turns off to the west.We drove 5.4 miles to an open camping area. There we took the dirt road to the right for .2 mile to an iron gate. Then tarvelling the old woods road, left fork, and we followed the trail's blue blaze signs....Read More

As I drove north on US 441, I took th exit for Highway 17 North. This led me through Toccoa, Georgia. North of the town, there is the small Toccoa Falls College, a Bible-based training school. On the campus is a path that leads to the waterfall. I paid a small fee ($3.00) to park and go to the falls. The cost was well worth the price that I paid. This falls is 19 feet higher than Niagara (186 feet), although it doesn't put out the volume of the other. Still, it can be deadly. There are articles in the area which mention a rainstorm in 1977 which caused a dam to collapse above the falls. This caused the death of 35 or so people. The short path to the falls is relatively ea...Read More

"Cut with a liquid knife. Water rushes over a rock's sharp edge while millions of gallons of clear mountain water pond the jagged rocks below. Forcing its way down river, the white water cuts through a gorge that has taken an eon to carve, as the rushing liquid rolls across the land, heading out to sea. The power is evident." These words, from The Highlander, express my feelings about waterfalls better than I can express them. DeSoto Falls is one of the unexpected beautiful waterfalls found in North Georgia. I travelled to the falls to show my wife what they were like. I had once lived about 30 miles from them, and visited them regularly, but I wanted to show my wife the things that I enjoy...Read More

We went to Amicalola Falls State Park with the express intent of viewing the fabulous, 729 foot waterfall there. As with most of the state parks in Georgia, there is a $2 entrance fee for one-time users. The park has a visitor's center and a beautiful lodge, but we were at the park for other purposes. There are more than 12 miles of hikig trails available, but the two best are the trail from the lodge (at the top of the falls), along the crest of the ridge to the falls and the path from the parking area to the observation deck at the base of the falls. Both of these trails are relatively easy to navigate. The scenery from either of these venues is breath-taking. A recent addition has been...Read More

One of the most beautiful of Georgia's waterfalls is Anna Ruby Falls. We travelled to Helen, through the city, north, then turned onto GA 356 for 1.5 miles. There was a parking area that we could use for $2.00. There was a trail of about 1/2 mile that led to the base of the waterfalls. This waterfalls is actually two falls in one. There are two creeks, Curtis Creek and York Creek, which meet together at this spot. The geography of the area allow both creeks to have waterfalls at the exact spot that they join, one of 50 feet and the other of 153 feet. They meet at the base of the falls, flow into Unicoi Lake, and eventually into the Chattahoochee River. My wife is named Anna, ...Read More
