We ate here in June 2008 and even though they have changed owners there has not been any change in the quality of the food or service, both were excellent.

Rainetree bills themselves as the "home of slow cooking" and certainly everything we have ever had there tasted like it had spent ample time in the kitchen being prepared. Located in the village of South Sterling which frankly is in the middle of no where the menu also gives their location with a tongue in cheek "in the center of the financial district". We love this place, what’s not to love about a place with a sense of humor and fantastic food?

At some point in one of our many visits I must have signed up for their birthday club because I received a postcard offering me a free meal with a value up to $18 for one month from my birthday. We arrived there on a Saturday in June without a reservation and luckily we got their last table. As it turned out it was a great table with a view of the fountain.

We began with a basket of fresh yeasty bread with a crunchy crust that was served with butter but you have the option of asking for Olive Oil for dipping or margarine. It was very good bread and we were offered a second basket which we declined because we would have eaten it.

We opted to share an appetizer and chose the warm brie. It is served with apricot marmalade and candied walnuts and sesame crackers. It was really good, the combination of flavors and textures was inspired and certainly gave me some ideas of my own for serving brie. I picked the pork tenderloin marinated in peppercorns as my main course. It is served with a salad, starch and vegetable. You choose which starch and which vegetable. The salad was lettuce only but I detected Bibb and Boston among others. .

Al had the 10oz marinated skirt steak with brown sauce and Yukon gold smashed potatoes and the sauteed spinach (of course I get to eat that). I choose the rice pilaf and the sauteed zucchini. My pork was so tender I didn’t need a knife to cut it which was a good thing since I didn’t have one, evidently I gave it to our waitress with my bread plate. I want to rave about the vegetables here. The zucchini was sauteed with onions and summer squash in very thin pieces and was absolutely delicious but it paled in comparison to the spinach which was sauteed with minced garlic, it was the best I have ever had. The brown sauce with AL’s steak was also incredible and his steak was quite tender as well.

They have a very nice selections of desserts and daily offer a turnover served warm with a huge mound of vanilla ice cream. Al had the chocolate-raspberry which was the flavor of the day. This is not raspberry flavored chocolate both flavors are separate and very distinct, it was very good.
