Newly ...Read more I have now stayed at The Nines Hotel in Portland a couple of times and I must say, this hotel stands up to it's luxurious name. Being Portland's first and only five star hotel, The Nines has set the bar high for future luxury hoteliers. Newly completed within the last couple of years, The Nines is located within the fully restored and historic building that was the previous home to Meier & Frank. Perched right across the street from bustling Pioneer Square and the courthouse, the location could not be more perfect. You are literally in the center of the city within steps of big shopping, restaurants and transit. Plus, the views are to die for!

The layout of the Nines is pretty unique and in some cases, odd to tell you the truth. Upon entering, you will notice the lobby is non-exsistent. You will have to take the elevator to the eighth floor to find the lobby and to check-in. It is a little odd, but upon exploring the hotel grounds and rooms all oddness is forgotten. The main grounds are beautiful, decorated in muted greys and browns and sprinkled with vibrant pops of color, sparkly chandeliers, unique pieces of art and luxurious loungy furniture. It sure is a feast for the eyes and almost feels as if you are in a piece of pop art. The rooms and hallways however, take on a different feeling. A more modern approach to hollywood glamour style, the rooms are refreshing and super chic with subdued greys, browns with pops of aqua. The bathrooms are elegantly done with white marble floors and showers with corner vanities. The majority of the rooms feature different layouts with different furniture and different views. Some come with city views as mentioned before and others come with inner atrium views of the "Urban Farmer," (The Nines' premier restaurant) and the lobby lounge. I actually prefer the inner atrium views over the city views because it is quite unique and I love to people watch!

Being a five star hotel, amenities are pretty much endless. The hotel offers two restaurants. Urban Farmer, located inside the atrium lobby, is a steakhouse with Pacific Northwest cuisine influences. Departure is located on The Nines rooftop and offers Asian cuisine. In room dining is also available. For those who want a little more, the club lounge is available to everyone who is located on the club level floor and serves continental breakfast, mid-day snacks and sweets and an all day open bar. The hotel also offers a state of the art fitness center on the seventh floor with numerous free weights, cardio machines, flat panel TVs, etc. The complimentary business center is located on the same floor for 24 hours a day. For those who may not want to make the trek to the business center, free wifi is offered in the rooms and throughout the hotel during your stay as well. Those amenities, on top of the location should definitely keep anyone busy!!

Although this is a five star luxury hotel, it does not feel stuffy or above the rest. The customer service is great and employees are polite and extremely helpful. Both times I have stayed here I booked through Hotwire (for around $100/night) and was treated respectfully both times and given great rooms. Housekeeping does an excellent job with cleaning the rooms and making them feel elegant and luxurious. My only gripe (other then the lobby being on the eighth floor) is the rooms can be a little noisy at times. If you are not in a "quiet" room, there are times when it can get noisy from people walking though the hallways and doors opening and closing. For the most part, rooms do stay relatively quiet.

Because of the caliber of this hotel, rooms can be spendy at times. I usually book The Nines through Hotwire for around $100 a night instead of $250 or more. The Nines is the only five star hotel in Portland, so it will be the only five star hotel available on Hotwire. Score! The Nines' website also offers special rates during low season so that is another option.

All in all, I am in love with this hotel. The decor, atmosphere, ammenities...LOCATION! The rooms alone rank very high on my list and that is really what matters the most to the common traveler. The Nines definitely lives up to it's five star reputation in my opinion and I will be returning often! Close
