The Cours Saleya is the half street, half square long pedestrian thoroughfare, which is the nerve center of old Nice. Framed with centuries-old houses and shaded by plane trees, the long and narrow square hosts a colorful flower and food market in the mornings, Tuesday through Sunday. Large, professionally displayed stands rub shoulders with folding tables set up by family farmers. Farm produce and live fowl are displayed next to armloads of flowers rolled in paper cones. Every Monday morning a brocante and antique market draws avid junk collectors. An antique clock that now sits proudly on our mantel was bought here.
Low buildings separate the "Cours" from the seaside. Once housing the fishermen's catch, they are now home to seafood restaurants. The other side of the Cours Saleya is lined by terrace cafés and lovely old buildings.
The Vieille Ville and the Cours Saleya is definitely our favorite part of Nice. We enjoy going to the food market really early in the morning. It is said that professional cooks come here as early as 4AM for the best produce and catch of the day.
