Description: Located on the Thonburi west bank of the Chao Phraya River, Temple of the Dawn is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Thailand. Named Wat Arun after the Indian God of Dawn, the Temple is famous for its central prang (tower), which stands 250 feet high, intended to symbolize Mount Meru of Indian cosmology. Four small prangs frame the central one, each decorated by seashells and porcelain pieces once used as ballast in Chinese trading ships. Most tour packages in Bangkok make stops at Wat Arun, but if you’re not so lucky, the temple is still easily reachable by public transport.
