The Rathaus or Town Hall is the administrative head of the Handestadt of Hamburg where the Mayor and many other city officials hold office and is also a great tourist attraction!

When visiting the Rathaus you can merely visit the impressive entrance hall that features a short biography of Hamburg, mainly in German as well as finding out about current Hamburg politics and politicians,

If you want a more in depth history then purchase a ticket for one of the guided tours. Tours run on most days and are mainly conducted in German but there are several tours in English each day. Each tour costs 2Euros and lasts approximately 30 minutes. Tickets can be booked at the time or in advance in the Rathaus information booth.

The tour begins in the political headquarters of the city including the mayor’s parlour and meeting rooms. The overall feeling is one of ambiance and a city proud of its history as you see richly decorated rooms that reflect the strong political and economical history of this region including artefacts from all around the world.

Overall you will be guided through approximately 12-15 different rooms although the actual rooms seen on each tour varies upon if parliament is in session and what other activities are taking place at that time meaning that every tour can be slightly different! The highlight of the tour for us was the large hall which is used for large civic functions; this is truly spectacular with large chandeliers and an amazing dance floor--expect that no one is allowed to dance on it for fear of damaging it!

Some of the rooms here are as beauty as the great palaces of Europe yet you really do get closer and see more here. The 30-minute talk is a great length to hold your interest as you are guided through and learn lots of fascinating facts about the Rathaus including that pre-dates WW2 and suffered little damage during the war unlike much of Hamburg. The Rathaus also has more rooms than Buckingham Palace in London!

Once you have finished your tour be sure to check out the Rathaus café for coffee and cakes afterwards! Close
