I am a writer for People's Choice Guide Cancun Travel Survey Guide Book. Recently I was invited by the local Cancun authorities to attend the Mexico Travel Expo 2006 convention. The purpose of the convention was to promote Mexico and the progress of Cancun since Hurricane Wilma.
Although many of the more familiar name resorts such as the Ritz Carlton, Marriotts and Hyatt resorts are not yet open, most of Cancun's Hotel Zone has returned to normal. I can say first hand that I was surprised at how far the area has come since the storm considering how far they had to go. Almost all the restaurants are back to normal and operating on normal pre-hurricane schedules. The same can be said for the famous night clubs as well. The most exciting part of my trip was when I had the opportunity to walk along the newly restored beaches along the Hotel Zone's east side. Mostly I was floored when I walked on the beach at the NH Krystal Hotel, which hasn't had a beach since the early 1990s! With the Hilton having just opened their doors on May 1st, and the few remaining hotels that are still planning to reopen this summer, Cancun is a place that should be considered, reopen and more than ready for business.
