We needed another room and we were told by the owner that he had another property down the road that was due to be ...Read more When we arranged our accommodation here, we were told by the owner there was only one room available with two beds in the main lodge. We needed another room and we were told by the owner that he had another property down the road that was due to be completed by Jan 1st, just a few days before our December 29th visit. We acknowledged that the new site was a new site, and he agreed that because of this, breakfast would be "thrown in" for free.

Upon arriving to the lodge, we found our secondary accommodation to be nothing more than a half-completed construction site, with workers still on site and absolutely no furniture in the toxic smelling rooms. There was construction fencing still up, and a broken entrance door. In addition to absolutely no security, there was no place to put our bags and no hot water. Granted, we were told that this was a newly constructed building, HOWEVER, when a property owner agrees to rent out rooms at FULL PRICE, one would assume the property to be absolutely habitable on a level comparable to their other accommodations, which it clearly was not.

After explaining our distaste of the accommodation to the owner that evening, he agreed to a 50% refund of our pre-paid price. Later that same night, we were again approached be the owner and were told that he had changed his mind and now was not going to give us the refund for no apparent reason. We agreed to discuss the topic further in the morning.

Arriving back at the main lodge at 8:15 after spending the night down the road, the rest of our party in the main lodge had been eaten alive by bugs because there were NO SCREENS on the doors! Furthermore, the owner had vanished! After eventually tracking him down via cell phone through the desk attendant he offered then to refund 35% after much haggling, and then went back on his word AGAIN and went back on his word. After much haggling- we received about a 35 dollar refund. Why would anyone with any sense of responsibility not eat 50% on one room to satisfy a customer is beyond comprehension!

Furthermore, this "Ecolodge" is completely devoid of eco-activities with just one short trail down to the river. There are no trail maps, no outdoor activities to speak of, little nearby in terms of attractions--and no help from the owner outside of offering to call up a "friend" to give us a paid tour. We had a terrible experience here and couldn't wait to leave; which is really sad because the rainforest is beautiful. Take my advice and go to northern El Yunque, where you’ll find the visitor center, a plethora of trails, swimming holes, and lookouts. Close
