Legend has it that a maiden named Naipi was so beautiful that the water of the river remained still every time she looked at herself in the reflections. Naipi had been promised for marriage to M'Boy, a God. However, there was a young warrior named Tarobá who fell in love with Naipi.On the day the beautiful Indian maiden was to be married, Tarobá eloped down river on a canoe with Naipi.When M'Boy realized that Tarobá and Naipi had run away together, he became furious and dove deep into the ground, twisting his body and producing a large gorge that gave birth to a huge waterfall. Engulfed by the water, the canoe and the two lovers fell in the water and disappeared forever. The legend says that Naipi was turned into one of the rocks in the center of the falls, which is permanently flogged by the raging waters. Tarobá was turned into a palm tree standing at the edge of a cliff. Under this palm tree, there is the entrance of a cave under the Devil's Gorge where a vengeful monster lies eternally watching its two victims.

Iguazu Falls National Park is known for one of the most spectacular sights in South America. They border the countries of Brazil and Argentina. The Falls are U-shaped and the opportunities for photographs are endless. The jungle around the falls is home to hundreds of species of birds and butterflies and mammals such as the coati and jaguar. The 275 Falls can be visited from either Argentina or Brazil, with two thirds of the Falls in Argentina. These parks were designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1984 and 1987 and is now being nominated for one of The Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The Falls can be reached from Foz do Iguazu in Brazil or Puerto Iguazu in Argentina. There is one bus from the Foz do Iguazu airport that will take you directly to the Brazil side. The Brazil side is connected by a long walkway with an extension to the lower base of Devils Throat and the Argentina side is accessible by the Rainforest Ecological Train which will bring visitors to different walkways and views. The Paseo Garganta del Diablo is a trail of almost a mile in length and will bring you directly over the falls of Devil's Throat. You can easily sign up for a day tour to Argentina from Foz do Iguazu in Brazil through your hotel or through tour companies in town.

I would suggest planning a full day on the Argentina side of the Falls and another full day on the Brazilian side. There is also a wonderful bird park across from the Brazilian side. You can spend a day visiting the falls in the morning and the Bird Park in the afternoon. The entrance fee was expensive but well worth it. There are birds and butterflies from all over Brazil along with species from other parts of the world. The park name is Parque Das Aves and is located in front and to the left of the entrance to the Falls. Close
