Rancho Meling is a wonderful escape into the wild and unexplored highlands southeast of Ensenada. Travelling an hour south down Mexico 1, you turn off and head an additional 42 kilometers east. This dirt road offers gorgeous views after about fifteen minutes, but the bumpy path is still hellish. It took us two hours to traverse the road, and we were more than ready to bolt out of the car when we finally made it to the ranch.
Despite the efforts involved in getting there, Rancho Meling is a wonderful destination. Founded in 1893 by the original owners, it was destroyed in 1911 and rebuilt by the Meling family. The $115 for two ($65 single) includes all meals and activities around the ranch, including horse riding with an experienced guide. A spring fed pool didn''t tempt me in with all the natural debris floating on the surface, but I guess most days it is plenty warm enough to entice bathers. A private airstrip is even available in case you want to charter a flight to this remote location.
While the accomodations were somewhat spartan, staying at the ranch is still quite a value. All the meals were excellent, the horse riding sublime, and the panoramic views simply amazing. I can''t wait to go back again and further visit the adjacent Parque Nacional Sierra San Pedro Martir.
