    Overview

    Quote:
For many Californians, Ensenada is Baja and a destination unto itself. The ever-expanding city has a population of close to a half million people, and is certainly geared towards providing the visiting gringos with a good time. But if you're really interested in discovering the Baja peninsula, cut your visit short after a few fish tacos and head south to the exciting coastline or up the treacherous roads towards Parque Nacional Sierra San Pedro Martir. The definite highlight for me on my trip was staying over at the Rancho Meling, an hour and a half off the Mexico 1 highway. I'm sure there are even more exciting sights to behold in this vast and largely unexplored frontier.Quick Tips: ...Read More

Rancho Meling is a wonderful escape into the wild and unexplored highlands southeast of Ensenada. Travelling an hour south down Mexico 1, you turn off and head an additional 42 kilometers east. This dirt road offers gorgeous views after about fifteen minutes, but the bumpy path is still hellish. It took us two hours to traverse the road, and we were more than ready to bolt out of the car when we finally made it to the ranch.Despite the efforts involved in getting there, Rancho Meling is a wonderful destination. Founded in 1893 by the original owners, it was destroyed in 1911 and rebuilt by the Meling family. The $115 for two ($65 single) includes all meals and activities around the ranch, incl...Read More

The Hotel la Pinta is the "high end" accommodation in the Bahia de San Quintin area, but that doesn''t mean it meaures up to a seasoned traveller''s expectations. At $80 for a double, the large hotel seems to be lacking in amenities. There appears to be no upkeep, with some windows boarded shut and whole sections seemingly abandoned. The resort''s restaurant and bar only seemed to be drawing locals. But there is a lovely fountain courtyard area in the open air lobby of the hotel, and you have direct access to the beach. Most rooms appear to have sea views and terraces. One thing to keep an eye out for is the less-than-stellar road from the freeway leading to the Hotel La Pinta. Exit from Mexic...Read More

Baja cuisine isn't very complex or varied. Simple food served quickly would best describe the staples served at both roadside stands and "fine" restaurants. Certainly no dish is more popular in the Ensenada area than tacos de pescado, usually made with fried halibut. Viva Mexico Taqueria, located next to the popular Hussong's Cantina, serves us the fish tacos pronto, making for an inexpensive and greasy meal. They don't taste particularly good or bad, just oily. But when in Rome... Such was our experience with the supposedly "heavenly" tacos de pescado. For some refreshment afterwards we visited the neighboring ice cream parlor, which had an enormous number of flavors from which to choose.

Hussong's Cantina was opened in 1892 by a German immigrant. It has, in the past one hundred years, been the center of town and largely responsible for the amazing growth of this once remote Baja outpost. The "bar that built a town" is busy for most of the day and night as far as I can tell, with a fair mix of locals and gringo tourists looking to guzzle a few Mexican beers and experience the frontier qulaity of this lively relic from the past. Live mariachi music is performed regularly, and everyone seems open to lively conversation. Best to keep your eyes and ears open, however, as many of the drinkers appeared to be eager for an old-fashioned "confrontation." Sometimes authenticity can be a lit...Read More

Across the street from the immensely popular Hussong's Cantina is an even larger bar that seems designed especially for visiting college students. Without the charm or history of its long-standing neighbor, Papas & Beers still manages to reel them in for cheap beer and loud music. The multi-level building appears much like any collegiate pub back in the States, and features all the familiar frat boys songs that make your eyes roll (i.e. Beach Boys' "Kokomo"). The bar is amazingly popular enough to support multiple gift shops throughout town. Go figure…
