Description: On an island packed with stunning geological sites, the Melissani Underground Lake stands apart. This visitor favorite was discovered in 1951, when an earthquake dislodged part of its roof, revealing a gorgeous turquoise lake. The cave was known to the ancient Greeks, as evidenced by the oil lamps, plates and figures of Pan found upon exploration. Today the underground lake is one of Kefalonia’s most popular tourist destination. Visitors pile into small boats, rowed by tour guides whose voices echo in the rocky chamber. Be sure to come on a bright day when the sun is high in the sky to get the full effect of the sun on the turquoise waters.
