There is one large cave at Drogharati that you are allowed to wander around. You have to go down about 120 steps, which are a little slippery and far harder to walk up. Thankfully there are places to stop. The caves are estimated to be about 150 million years old and are about 150 feet below ground level. The cave itself has very unusual read and orange stalactites and stalagmites. The lighting helps to cast interesting shadows. The cave is large and has quite a high roof. You enter it onto a raised area, before descending steps to a flat piece of ground. The acoustics are impressive, and it's easy to see why they use this as a venue for concerts. It can hold over 500 people. ...Read More

Near the other caves on Kefalonia, this is by far the best sight. As you enter you descend a long sloping corridor to reach a tiny jetty in a cool cave. From the jetty you can only see a little of the beauty of this sight. This cave was first explored in 1951, but due to an earthquake, part of the roof has caved in. As the sunlight steams into the large cave, the lake produces a kaleidoscope of colours. There are some very friendly Greek boatmen, who take you out onto the lake and around the little island. As you gently bob along, the sight around you is magnificent. The boatmen are good fun too - one sings songs, another tells jokes, one is deadly silent. The cave is ...Read More

Set in the lush green valley of Omala just outside the village of Frangata stands the monastery of the island's patron saint, Ayios Yerasimos. Here the patron saint is kept on display and then brought out for the yearly festival on the 16th August. You can see this in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, although I'm told that in recent years one of the arms has fallen off the saint. The monastry is in beautiful surroundings, and itself is a fine example of Greek architecture. The roof is a lovely burnt orange, and most of the walls are wight. Inside, you have numerous candles, trinkets, paintings, frescoes and the saint himself on display. The grounds are pretty, consisting of a couple of ...Read More

Argostoli has been the capital of Kefalonia since 1757 and is situated on a beautiful bay within its peninsula - a prime spot for defence against invaders. The town was destroyed, without most of the island, in 1953. Subsequent development has given it a European feel, whilst still maintaining its small town charm. There are plenty of shops here to enjoy, and you can easily find the islands hand made gold and silver jewellery. Entertainment focuses on Valliano square, which is a reasonably large square surrounded by cafes, bars and hotels. It is very lively during the summer, and you're only a few metres from the quayside. The quay is in lovely surroundings and there are...Read More
