The hotel is an old two-story building built around a courtyard. Although the place is a bit run down, it has some nice and some funky details.
I went into the tiny, dark front office, where two old men were watching TV. One quickly jumped up, gave me information about the hotel and a handful of keys so I could choose my room. He also informed me that I could park inside. I handed the fistful of keys to Libby and headed off to park the car.
I had to drive through the seating area off reception, over a nicely tiled floor, to get into the parking lot, which is actually the courtyard. It has space for two cars. I was told that Libby had chosen room 21, on the second floor, and off I went. The room was tiny but very cute. The bedroom had two twin beds, a tiny bureau, and a nightstand nowhere near either bed. Surprisingly, it had a small TV with great cable service and a telephone.
Past the bedroom was a small sitting room with a table, two chairs and a wrought-iron chandelier. Glass doors led to a miniscule balcony. We had a view of the street; the hotel across from us had a wonderful façade.
The bathroom was old, worn and not terribly clean, but oddly enough, it had fancy little bottles of shampoo and lotion. The shower had a large opaque window facing into the hallway, which although not see-through, I’m sure provides a doozy of a silhouette show. Getting wet in the shower can be quite a challenge - plenty of water spews out, but in all different directions, and unfortunately, the best concentration of water shoots right into the toilet. I just shuffled back and forth in an attempt to get wet and tried not to think of the bizarre show I was putting on for those out in the hallway!
The bed was surprisingly comfortable; the pillow was not. The hotel is downtown on a busy street - the noise didn’t bother me, but light sleepers should ask for a room in the back.
To find the hotel, head east from the zocalo (plaza) on Valladolid for about three blocks, turn right on Quiroga (if driving go an extra block and loop around, this street is one-way), after about two blocks the hotel is on the right across the street from the hotel Mintzicuri.
