At one time it did. In the last 95 years, however, city planning went awry and now the grand old Sylvia is slightly overshadowed but a mixture of modern, and not so modern, ugly tower blocks. It holds its own though and should win an award for the most impressive wall of ivy on the Gilford Street side.

Unfortunately the impression that this historic building makes from the outside doesn’t quite carry through to the inside, where any effort to preserve its historic décor must have waned and was covered up by someone who was more a fan of 1970s or 80s style than they were of the early 1900s. It’s a pity to see such unfulfilled potential but the Sylvia Hotel does deliver in other ways: a prime location, helpful staff, comfortable beds, and a beach view bar perfect for cocktails at sunset.

The Sylvia Hotel has its own parking lot where you can leave your car for a $9.31 charge. From here on foot, you can be in Robson Street in about 20 minutes, on the beach in seconds, and in Stanley Park in less than five minutes. There is a good choice of bars and restaurants all within walking distance and the front desk staff were really helpful in recommending places to eat and sights to visit. They also give away photocopies of a uniquely hand-drawn map, which is easier to put in your back pocket than a guidebook.

Now a Heritage building, the Sylvia Hotel opened as an apartment building in 1912 but was converted into a hotel following the Depression. In 1986, a new portion was added to the east side of the building and it was in this wing that we stayed.

We checked in early with no problem. Our room faced away from the beach but it was very quiet and spacious and had the basic amenities of cable television, hairdryer, and room phone. It’s in the bedroom that you feel the real disconnect between the past and the present. The walls were a drab brown colour and the bathroom and bedspread were straight out of a mid-range motel. It was very comfortable, just in need of some TLC from a caring and talented interior decorator.

Come 7pm, we found our way to the bar for cocktails. The clientele was largely 40+ and many of them were ordering from the dinner menu, which looked ok but not good enough to entice us to do the same. We tried a Sylvia Mojito and a local Russell beer. The Mojito was made with Limonata, which was interesting mainly for the fact that I couldn’t taste the usually distinct Limonata flavour in the drink. The service was slow but if you’re happy to while away the sunset hours then this isn’t a big drawback.

The Sylvia is a beautiful old Heritage building.

The staff were exceptionally friendly and very helpful.

The rooms were large and clean, a little faded, but still very good value for money.

The location is fantastic.
