Description: Reminiscent of the Gilded Age, the New York Palace Hotel sits atop what was once the Villard Mansion. Created from connected mansions built in the 1880s owned by railroad baron Henry Villard, today the New York Palace’s tower rests atop these renovated homes. With 55 stories, the best views from the New York Palace are of the adjacent St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
This opulent hotel is one of the leading luxury hotels in New York, and Villard was not its only famous owner. The "Queen of Mean" Leona Helmsley once ran the hotel to her exacting standards before her legendary fall from grace. Having weathered these and other peaks and valleys of the hotel business, today the New York Palace is part of the Dorchester Collection of luxury hotels, where it retains its spot as one of the most comfortable and gracious places to stay in the city. In addition, the New York Palace occupies a prime location near Rockefeller Plaza and New York’s theater district, placing it firmly in the heart of Manhattan and within walking distance of many famous places.
Staying at the New York Palace truly makes one feel like royalty, from the well designed and stylish rooms with large windows and great views of the city to its many amenities, including a full-service spa that offers treatments every day until 9 pm (a real luxury) and a 7,000 square foot fitness center with the latest cardio and weight lifting equipment (along with complimentary fitness wear, in case a guest accidentally leaves his or her workout gear at home).
Perhaps one of the nicest amenities is free transport to Wall Street or the theater district. This is more limited, but if a New York Palace guest plans ahead, this can be a nice service to enjoy that few hotels offer. Among other services that are on offer at the New York Palace are a multilingual concierge staff and business center.
Dining at the hotel is so good, many will be tempted to forego the hassle of booking elsewhere. True to its theme, the hotel’s most opulent restaurant is Gilt, serving creative New American cuisine under the leadership of Chef Justin Bogle, who has earned the restaurant two Michelin stars. All day dining can be enjoyed at Instana, an American brasserie, which features live piano music in the evenings. In-room dining is nothing to complain about either, and the hotel (in partnership with "Cooking Light" magazine) features healthy requests any time of the day or night.
From its soaring lobby to the elegant restaurants to the attentive service by its staff to its comfortable hotel beds and upscale toiletries, New York Palace makes the total experience a delight for travelers to New York City. Whatever one exacting standards one has for a fine hotel, the New York Palace is sure to measure up.
