After an hour's drive through the rolling green countryside in an A/C van, we are greeted with lush landscaping, ponds with flamingos and ducks and a huge open air lobby with more ponds and waterfalls. This is Secrets Excellence!! An adults-only all-inclusive resort on a long palm fringed beach. The resort feels like a small village. It has a square with daytime activities and nightime music or entertainment. Accommodations are spacious - a canopied king or two queen beds, rattan sofa and chair. All have balconies and some patios even sport a hammock. A large Jacuzzi tub for two separates the sleeping area from the dressing area. Amenities include A/C, coffee maker, minibar, safe, ceiling fa...Read More

Mediterranean Seafood Grill

Restaurant

Quote:
This restaurant exudes atmosphere -- the Mediterranean Seafood Grill is an open air palapa restaurant facing the ocean. Tablecloths -- even at lunch time -- and comfortable cushioned rattan chairs makes lingering over another glass of wine very easy. It's worth waiting for the outside row of tables. Having lunch here feels as though you may be in Tahiti -- gentle breezes -- your table overlooks the dunes and you see the tops of the beach palapas and the ocean beyond. Could also give you the feeling of a European cafe on the Mediterranean with folks strolling by hand in hand. The grill menu features, shrimp, lobster, calamari, grouper, tuna, clams, salmon or veggies. Whatever the fisher...Read More

Quisqueya Restaurant

Quiqueya is Secrets candle-lit gourmet restaurant available by reservation only. It's a small A/C restaurant with a continental menu. You'll find mostly tables for two -- no loud groups here. Reservations can only be made from 3-5pm daily. If the times are not convenient for that particular day, you will be given a reservation for the next day at your choice of time. The service is leisurely and formal but enjoyable since a pianist provides background music. Men are required to wear long pants and collared shirts -- these well dressed people and the music create a "supper club" atmosphere. Lobster bisque and hearts of palm salad were savored bite by bite. The loin of lamb was...Read More

Texas Steakhouse

This open air palapa over the pool is accessed via a bridge. It's worth waiting -- at the long bar -- for a prized table. These are on an elevated area on stilts over the pool. It's quiet, breezy and not "buggy" (mosquitoes are pesky after a shower). A casual lunch menu has choices of 1/2 pound beef burgers (very popular), veggie burgers, fajitas, quesidillas, shish-Kebab(delicious and tender) wings and ribs complemented by a self-serve salad and dessert bar. Flickering candlelight and tablecloths transforms the mood of the steak house at night. You are also entertained by the music that drifts over from the evening entertainment in the nearby square. Five types of US Choice ...Read More

RIU Palace Punta Cana - All Inclusive

Beach at RIU Palace Punta Cana Photo - RIU Palace Punta Cana - All Inclusive, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Quote:
RIU Palace is Punta Cana's newest resort and it is beautiful. The RIU complex consists of 5 hotels of varying ambience appealing to different clientele. The PALACE is at the top of the chain and also the most expensive. Guests at the PALACE have access to all facilities at all of the hotels - but why leave - it has the best of everything. Seven four-story buildings in a horse-shoe shape sit back about 100 yards from a beautiful soft sandy two mile cove of a beach. Most rooms have some oceanview but none are oceanfront since the beach is lined with lots of palm trees and the resort is built perpendicular to it. The main lobby is quite ornate and formal. Check-in for groups (Apple Vacations) takes ...Read More

Occidental Grand Punta Cana

Hotel | "Occidental Grand Punta Cana - Timeshare Exchange"

Quote:
When a 2 Bedroom exchange became available to Occidental Grand Punta Cana through RCI for mid-July, we were excited – I called both the resort and the US Reservations number in Miami and was told that 2BR Master Suites were located in the Royal Club with a special dining room, private beach, international brand name liquor, newspaper, free internet etc. It was quite a surprise when we received an e-mail and phone call from The Vacation Club representative offering us discounted transportation from the airport and the option to pay our All-Inclusive fee ahead in order to save on the exchange fee. When I asked him about the Royal Club, he informed me that RCI exchanges are not to the Royal ...Read More

Hotel | "Overview of Occidental Grand Punta Cana"

Quote:
We've been to Punta Cana for three vacations and have stayed at Occidental chain in Nuevo Vallarta, Cozumel and Xcaret. Having enjoyed those experiences, we accepted an RCI Timshare exchange for July at Occidental Grand Flamenco Punta Cana . I've devoted another review specifically addressing timeshare - this one will focus on the resort as a whole. The entrance to the Grand Flamenco is along a pot-holes dirt road - not as impressive as other resorts we've been to. It's mid-afternoon and the very large lobby is bustling with activity - people with luggage on their way home - others returning from excursions, others plan...Read More

Occidental Grand has activities for both kids and adults - the schedule is full from 9AM to 1AM. Rain or shine it doesn't seem to matter - the actviities staff is young and energetic. They keep the kids busy with the little ones in a gated play area near a shallow pool and the older ones playing volleyball, bocce, horseshoes, darts and beach games. Adults have stretching, water aerobics, step classes, Latin dance lessons, Spanish classes and competition games. Tennis courts, archery and basketball courts are close to the main building. At the beach, snorkeling, kayaking and catamaran sailing are included. For an extra fee there is scuba, wind surfing and water skiing available. Ou...Read More

Hotel | "Bars at Occidental Grand Punta Cana"

Quote:
Occidental Grand Punta Cana has 9 bars - three are private and only two serve top shelf liquor - Most are not traditional bars to socialize at, but rather almost self-serve service bars - by that I mean that you order the liquor from the bar staff - then you put in your own ice and mixer (pepsi, juice, sprite etc) from a dispenser. The lobby bar, beach bar and pool bar serve brands of liquor that most Americans are not familiar with. All drinks at the pool and beach are served in flimsy plastic cups. This also holds true for the two bars that service the restaurants and entertainment pavillion. There is no waiter service except at the Royal Club and Air Transat's Preference Club beachside.- It's...Read More
