Western Puerto Rico

Overview

Quote:
Puerto Rico is small in size but huge in places to see. The Western area is less hectic than the San Juan metropolitan area, and for that reason alone makes it the ideal zone for those seeking relaxation in a non-resort sort of way. From Cabo Rojo and its lighthouse overlooking the Caribbean on the southernmost point of the island, to Mayagüez and its top-notch university; Rincón and its world-class surf spots, and Aguadilla and its well-known Crashboat Beach, there's plenty of sun and fun to be had.Quick Tips: Surfing!Rincón, Aguadilla, Aguada, IsabelaEating!Joyuda in Cabo Rojo, La Parguera in Lajas, Brazo Gitano from Franco in Maya...Read More

Walking north of Crashboat Photo - Playa Crashboat Beach, San Juan, Puerto Rico

This favorite of families sports a powerful surf spot just north of the main public area called Gas Chambers, but the reliability of the break is not great.

Crashboat itself offers a few yards of shallow water on both sides of a walkable pier.

The pier juts out about 20 meters out into the Mona Passage, but it's broken from an apparent tidal wave that broke it. Nevertheless, it's usable as a diving platform into deeper water. Weak swimmers beware: the current here can be a little strong.

Buyé beach is your actual destination in Cabo Rojo, but if great snorkeling in the area south of Buyé is not in your plans, walk a little south on the beach, just past the horrid houses right on the water's edge. The Puerto Rico Conservation Trust maintains the Punta Guaniquilla reserve, home to may migrating birds, an awesome lagoon with petrified coral formations, and curiously the lagoon that once harbored the famous Puerto Rican bucaneer Roberto Cofresí in the 19th century (the lagoon used to connect to seawater every high tide), keeping him and his treasures plundered from merchant ships safe from prying Spanish patrols. Experienced land navigators will seek the cave whe...Read More

Mayagüez

Mayagüez is a college town, and for the casual visitor, the surface doesn't seem to offer much more than that. This small city does pack a lot of charm for such an appearance. The university campus is beautiful and very well kept; never mind the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus is my alma mater. For cheap, good food, head to La Ricomini Bakery in the city center. At least expect to find good Brazo Gitano here or at Franco in the Waterfront area (don't expect a well-kept area here, think more industrial). Cheap, fruity sangría, from Fido, is easy to drink, but try to get it from La Ricomini if possible (the original location is not easy to find for non-locals)...Read More
