I went to Kerala two years ago, and i am returning there again at the end of the year. The lovely people are just the icing on top of the cake, friendly and eager to soak up any new English slang words or popular tv catchphrases that they can, are just wonderfully entertaining too. We stayed, and will be returning to, the lovely Leela Beach right on Kovalams sea front. We felt like royalty the whole time we spent here, nothing was unatainable, and we just could not fault this place at all. Rooms were fantastic, we had a lovely view of the palm fringed beach being as our hotel was built into the cliff side. For the less mobile...(me) there is a constant flow of little open cars to take you right down to the beach and to the Thai Restaurant that also belongs to the hotel..this you have to book for, and the food is wonderful.
The Leela is set right away from the busy bustling street, this is ideal as it adds to the already tranquil setting, the only people you see are the odd beach sellers, and they are friendly, and will usually give up quite quickly, and just stop for a chat about anything and everything.
Lighthouse Beach has just got to be soaked up in the evening, this is the heart of Kovalams eating out places, and bric a brac stalls. We went there every night, and never tired of walking the whole length of it, spotting something different every night. Fusion was our favourite Restaurant there, the food was simply amazing, the value was good, although a little more expensive than most others, it was well worth it. The diverse menu on their list left nobody wondering what they could have if they didnt like the spicy menu of the Keralans. All in all, this is a lovely slow paced place to spend a holiday in, either at the lovely Leela Beach, or in a smaller little hotel, Kerala will always be top of my list. We were due to go back last year, but First Choice just cancelled our holiday, and we were devestated to have to wait another year for our return.
